Dual 1218

What happens if you lift the tonearm and slowly move it over its travel in toward the label area past the expected point at which it should cycle? There should be a mechanical click as it engages the lift / return cycle. If so, the mechanism works but might be out of adjustment due to wear and tear.

Perhaps cycling the Record Size switch a few times might have a positive effect on the function. There doesn't seem to be a user adjustment for the end of play cycle.

You can get the manual for free after you register at:
http://www.vinylengine.com/library/dual/1218.shtml

If you decide to venture into the mechanics be cautious, always protect the tonearm from damage and make sure you rotate the platter only clockwise as there are mechanical interlocks that could get damaged if you turn it the wrong way.

It sounds like you need to replace the belt. If it's too loose, it will not maintain the proper speed.

No sound from left channel on turntable

One of several things could be causing this. Let's start at the begining. Look at the cartridge on the tone arm and make sure that all four wires are attached. Remove the bottom or the unit from the bottom to access the wires underneath. Using a DMM check continuity for each wire from the cartridge to the end of the cord where it plugs in to the amplifier. Somewhere there could be a break. If this all checks out and there is no break then I would purchase a new cartridge as the left channel is bad, provided that you know absolutely that the amplifier does not have a problem. If you have another amp you should first try it to make sure that the amp is not the problem. When you are absolutely sure that the cartridge is the problem go to www.mcmelectronic.com where you will be able to get a very good, possibly better, cartridge at a very good price. Let me know how you make out or if you need more help.

Replacing the belt on any turntable requires removing the platter. There are various schemes to keep them on but most involve a "C" clip clipped in a groove just above the platter on the spindle. You may have to remove the rubber mat to access the clip. Most rubber mats are glued down but can be pried off with patience and some force with a 1" scraper. Once the mat and platter are removed the belt can be discarded and a new one installed. Replace the platter. There will be one or possibly two oblong holes in the platter. Using a flat screwdriver hold tension on the belt and rotate the platter to get the belt around the drive and continue with turning the platter until you are sure the belt is around the drive ring on the platter and the motor spindle. You can tell because the platter will have some resistance due to spinning the motor. Reassemble the mat. It can just be placed on the platter. Unless you are going to run it upside down, which wouldn't work, it won't fall off. You are done and the unit should work like a new one. If you haven't purchased a belt this website www.mcmelectronic.com has belts for most units and also a variety pack of different length belts which should have one which will fit. Let me know how you make out or if you need more help.

Ensure that the turntable is sitting as flat as possible and does not allow any external vibration to penetrate.
Also try operating it without a record on it make sure that the plate is turning smoothly without interruption and also does not have any vibration.

The fact that both won't play points to a fault on your stereo! It's likely (if all other functions are good on it) that the fault is in the cartridge pre-amp of the amp. You can trace this by putting your finger on the left & right imputs of the imputs and tracing them allong the wires to the pre-amp section. You should hear a buzz if it's working.

Technics sl 1200 MK2 WEAK SOUND

Regarding the poor sound quality (and possibly the skipping):
check the needle condition, see if exchanging it with a needle (or the entire pickup head) from a working turntable does any good.

Check the pickup connection pins (contacts on the pickup head and on the end of the wires coming through the arm from the unit), see if there is any dirt or oxydation and clean the contacts if necessary, also check for any damage to the wires.

As for the skipping - a heavily worn needle may affect the sound quality and cause skipping as well - if cahnging the needle (or the pickup head) doesn't make a change, try to realign the weight on the tone arm so that the pickup head will become a bit heavier, this could help somewhat (before you actually try to realign the weight, try to put a small coin or a small weight of some kind on the pickup head while it is playing a record, if the skipping goes away, you need to realign the tone arm weight).

This could also be a problem with the tone arm lifting mechanism (may be obstructed by something or damaged so it won't let the tone arm sit properly onto the record and "grab" the groove).

I just mentioned a few things you might want to check, but don't take anything for granted, the problem may as well be elsewhere in the unit.

My 1200 was sitting on the carpet for a week in

Check the fuse underneath the platter. You'll have to remove the protective cover to access this area. If your unit has fuses (not all do), it will be on the lower left side. If you do not see anything, then your unit does not have any fuses, and this means that the power transformer (the big grey metal box thing) is damaged and needs to be replaced. I only suggest this be done by a professional service center.

Pitch Control Problems

More than likely the pitch needs to be calibrated. Although not very hard, I would suggest getting this done by a professional, as it does require opening up your turntable.

Here are instructions - TECHNICS PITCH CALIBRATION

If you cannot perform this, then find yourself a good technician who knows what they are doing.

If this does not work, more than likely either your pitch control, the pitch gain, or one of the IC's need to be replaced - at this stage, only a qualified service tech can help you.

Good luck!
