you might want to try and update the firmware on the DVD burner, find out with the vendor if there is a fw version and how to do it, if not I would suggest hiring a professional.

hi ruth , do you mean burning software for burning cd's or the driver to use the sony dvd rw aw-q170a so the computer to see it.... if it is burning software most times might find it from the company bought the computer from... at their website just have to check you can get from them as download... did you check see if you have any software reinstall cds for software... i know companies do not supply them anymore but could check. if the website does not supply the download to get software you might have to call the company of the computer see they can get the software reinstall disc for programs for like dvd rw you have...

Uninstall while in safe mode. Go to your bios and make sure your CD Rom is detected. If it is then reinstall. If not then it isn't compatible with your computer

Click start control panel administrive tools,computer management,device manager scroll down cd-dvd rom drives you might see a yellow question mark ? right click you will have options to update driver,roll back driver,or select properties general troubleshoot, select driver click to reinstall drivers click update driver or uninstall then reinstall if this does not fix the problem it might be a registry problem if you cant see your disk drive in windows explorer Close all open programs

If any of the above keys shown in step 4 are listed, right-click on them and choose DeleteAfter deleting the keys, close the registry editorReboot your computerOpen My Computer and check to see if your CD or DVD drives have returned. It could be a problem withthe lens, you should try cleaning the lens it's already gone bad there is no harm in trying

When running your pc , open the drawer.> 2. switch off the acpower 3. remove powercable & sata or pata cable 4. remove all the screw from the back side 5. press clip to open the font panel 6. reverse the cd/dvd rw 7. just remove the cover 8. clean the optical lance 9. use a little( not much )oil place on two steel shaft 10.cover all the equipment 11.

now you can fit to your pc Ifit does the same problem please change the cd/dvd rw because the lance has defected.. hope this helps you

You can't. You'll have to buy a blueray disk drive.

Follow these steps

1. Click on Start
2. Click on Run
3. Type in REGEDIT
4. Click on OK
5. Click on the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

11. On the right pane, click to highlight Upperfilters

The actual dvd were also burned somewhere, did you burn your stuff correctly, try playing those cd on another computer.
CLEAN, WASH YOUR DVDs CAREFULLY DON'T DESTROY THEM.
It doesn't look like your dvd drive is faulty.

With DVD burners you cannot read disks, only write to them.

I have fought with the problem for the past few days including completely rebuilding windows --- with no success . The solution after 3 days was not software related, and not fault hardware either.

The problem occured after I had cleaned my cooling coils. There is no connection, but read on.

It was down to an earth screw. There is one screw missing from my case. When removing the back of a laptop be very careful to ensure that all the screws are replaced. In my case one screw was missing and I chose the worng hole "to leave empty" after cleaning my cooling coils.

Look carefuly any you might see set into the plastic fascia of the back of the computer a small circle with a dot/another small circle inside it. It is a very small symbol. This is the earth screw for the DVD/CD drive. Without it, for whatever reason, once windows boots up, then the CD will not be recognized unless there is a CD/DVD in the drive from boot.

On Soney.com or Drivers.com, you should be able to download the driver. You might also check to see if it needs a firmware update.

Hello my friend, try to insert another brand new disk with no scratch to test if its still work. If it is not then try to ship back the device to its supplier or find technician in your place to assist you in order to check if that device is still working. Sometimes the laser eye of the DVD ROM is something to do with that. also try to  clean your DVD ROM if you have disk cleaner.  Hope thisadvice helps you. Just contact me if you need more assistance.
