Technics SL-1200MK2 Turntable - Page 5 Questions & Answers
Hello, I hope I can make sense as English is not
If you are experiencing exactly the same problem with both turntables then the dirty contacts are probably not the problem.
You do not say what sort of amplifier you are playing the turntables through.
If your audio system / amplifier has a dedicated input for a record turntable (it will be marked PHONO) it may have a switch next to it - move the switch to the MAG (magnetic) position. This will solve your problem.
If it is a home audio system or even a disco amp with only an AUX (auxillary) input socket then you will need a PRE-AMPLIFIER to boost the signal from the cartridge to the right level to match the two together. Here is a link to the sort of thing you will need.

Phono Pre-Amps vary enormously in price - I have the Vivanco and it works very well but it will only take one turntable so you would need two of them or a DJ's model with 2 separate channels.

Need to know what settings
The counterwieght should be set the tracking force for the cartridge/stylus fitted. These are expressed in grams. Typical about 2 to 3 grams. If the weight has numbers on it these will match the grams. There's no right setting for the skate. Should the stylus start to skate accross the record increase the force. Start low!
On the arm movement, has the arm moved before after pushing start taking it to a record? As many turntables just don't.

Replacement Cartridge and stylus for Technics
That turntable, like many others, has an S-shaped tonearm with a removeable headshell. You can use any standard screw-mount cartridge as a replacement. Which one you buy depends on what you want to spend and your intended use. If you're a DJ you'll need a more rugged cartridge than you do for listening at home, for instance.
One company I buy lots of parts from is Parts Express. Here's a link to
their styli/cartridges pages. If you have the original cartridge and stylus, you can check if they have the exact replacement. Otherwise you can browse the other choices. You can find many other sources as well, and you may have an audio shop or musician's store in your area who stock cartridges.

hi,
may be ur turn tables cartridge or the wiring have some problem. first check the cartridge. for that u need a multimeter. select it into ohms range. and check the cartridges. there are 4 connections in the cartridge. 2 for each coils. should have a ohms range of 200 to 800. also check the continuity of the 4 wire from cartridge connecting point to rca end.

One channel on my sl1200
As a test, switch the right and left RCA cables from the turntable to the amp. If the problem reverses, the issue is in the turntable or with the cables. If it stays the same, its a problem with the amp.

Just bought a new Shure
it could be two things:
1.the tone arm wires that connect to the head shell (blue-red-green-white i think)
2. the needle arm has twisted round
Put it on the other deck if you've got one & see if it does it.
look right at the end of the needle tip,& see if it's straight & pointing down, if not carefully twist the needle arm round until it is,& push it into back in to the cartridge a little bit.
