ERR display
I had this same problem with my vn 4100 olympus digital recorder. I learn from someone else on this site that you could just hold the display/menu buttton and the stop button at the same time for about 2-3 seconds. the FOR display comes on and all you have to do is wait a couple of minutes and your recorder is working again. Just keep in mind that all previous recorder will no long be there. they will be deleted.

I HAVE AUDIO RECORDINGS THAT
a bit late, only just saw this question. my understanding is that clearing up background noise is a specialist task. if you look at a sound wave it's really difficult to discern the main wave from additional noise. and although its possible to edit out the background of a photograph, that gets a lot trickier with a video if you follow my metaphor. the best most of us can do is open the file in a sound app (i'm on a mac so i use quicktime for this) and find the menu option to raise the volume. Now its absolutely possible that someone has come up with some new software that i haven't heard of yet of course. however good practice is; make sure you record at a good volume to start with-
either do an audio test and listen back or set the levels with a
headphone.

Can't download the files from the voicerecorder on my Vista laptop
buy another voice recorder, my dad has had me scouraging the net for a vista driver, the drivers dont work so it looks like its the good old bin for the recorder. dont get me wrong the recording quality is excellent, just olympus have really screwed 1000's of people over this time and i dont think many of those will trust olympus with anything other than a standard film camera.
they should stick to what they know and keep out of the digital genre.
nuff said.
you could always trade it in at a Cash trading shop and get some money for another make if that helps !
sorry

Recorder comes on on its own
I downloaded a manual - previous version lost in a crash - and sorted it out with that
It wasn't the timer but the settings on "alarm playback function"

I cant download any files
Hi guys
I had the same problem with Windows vista and here is how I got my VN-4100PC to work.
1. Download and install digital wave player file from: http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/digitalwaveplayer.zip
2. Vista updates can be found on: http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_support_downloads.asp?id=1291&os=w
This do the trick!

Copy Files to a CD
You need to loacte the files on the unit and get them to your hard drive via the transfer function. Once on your machine use any cd (like Nero) creating program to back them up to a black cd. You have to make sure your computer has a cd burner.

I would set index marks if you need to get to a specific part. I am not sure if that's what you are trying to do. (not sure about changing folders - you always need to be in the folder where your files are) Check video manual on Olympus 4100PC at www.HandBookLive.com under Electronics category. There are chapters on setting index marks (scroll to the end of the video chapters)
