So frustrating! Yes, at first I was content with buying a new lamp for my Sony projection tv, $30 on Amazon, pop it in and ur good to go... Got this sucker as a hand me down and it lasted a few years before the bulb audibly popped. Now 4 years and 5 bulbs later I am on my last nerve with new bulbs. They have lasted progressively less and less time and now instead of popping and being obviously ready for a new bulb it does the off every couple minutes and back on routine described in the question. I have gone through the 150 page manual and tried all the diagnostic games, the quick explanation hear in the answers to reset the lamp hours is nice since you only have a couple minutes before it shuts down and you have to start over but alas it does nothing for me. I am guessing that as mentioned I might be getting defective bulbs from china now or something more drastic has been damaged over the years. Also, I work in a UPS warehouse and you don't want to know what happens to your package as it gets through the sorting process so it could just be that the bulb has been arriving shook and rattled to the point of poor functionality. Maybe overnighting to avoid it being lost in the sea of amazon junk that gets shipped or buying from a smaller distributor other than amazon would be smarter. Just be warned a new lamp may not be a very long term fix, the last 2 I got only lasted a few months before the auto turn off, turn on sequence strarts. I wish I could figure out how to just run it till it popped like before but I haven't, if anyone knows that trick, please do share. I am going to buy one more bulb to get me to around $200 worth of bulbs over the years, which is probably not a bad deal to have a decent tv for the last 10 years in the end. If you are replacing for the first time maybe go ahead and buy 2 bulbs because they will innevitably go up in price and you will innevitably have to replace it. Bulb is most likely OK. Original bulb in Sony TV is Philips, label on bulb usually says Philips. Sony don't make bulbs. Sony Cost is usually 1.5 times other sources. Many shopping cart operations sell condemned, reject or poor quality electronic service items because cost of return and fooling with them is excessive. This is obvious and widespread with convergence ICs and other parts.

Lamp timer needs reset. This is usually an automatic function. TV detects Increased lamp current from previous failed bulb or weak bulb condition and resets automatically. TV must be unplugged for lamp replacement for this to work. Occasionally it must be reset manually, as below:

1. TV must be in standby mode. (Power off).
2. Press the following buttons on the Remote Commander within a
second of each other:
DISPLAY Channel 5 Volume + POWER .1. Access Service Adjustment Mode and select the Service Menu that
contains the Category with the Adjustment Item you want to change.
2. To change the Category, press 2 or 5 on the Remote Commander.
Note: Pressing 2 or 5 only changes the categories within the
Service Menu displayed. To change a Category on one of the other
Service Menus, press the JUMP button until the correct Service
Menu is displayed.
3. To change the Adjustment Item, press 1 or 4 on the Remote
Commander.
4. To change the Data Value, press 3 or 6 on the Remote
Commander.
Note: To go back to the last saved Data Value, press 0 then ENT
on the Remote Commander to read the memory.
5. To save the changes, press MUTING then ENT to write into
memory.
6. To exit service mode, turn the power off by pressing POWER .
Wait 2 minutes before restarting the set to allow the fans to
completely shut down or the Service Menu will appear on the screen.

Pull your lamp out and re insert it. Make sure it is straight and you don't have to force it in. Then make sure all the doors are closed properly and tight. There are safty switches in there that if not pushed in, will trigger a 3 blink error. If after all this and you have the same problem, then you either have a bad T1 or T2 board. These are the small boards in the lamp door area that have the safety switches.

Hope Bob C does not mean computer_Bob who used to be a expert here.To address your question:If no error blink code exists (power light or other blinks a specific number of blinks) it likely is a issue in the power supply of the set which usually will give an error blink code of some type.Common failure reasons include but not limited to:LampBallastDirtYes, dirt inside (dust to be kind) will trigger shutdown etc.A lamp will usually before it fails give some indication like a dimmer picture but dirty fans and dust inside can also do this.In our shop if it is dirty inside first thing is it goes out the door and gets a good dose of compressed air--usually looks like a dust storm.Lamp life is on average 2,000 hours (average user it is 2 years) and generic lamps have a lesser life.Ballast usually is suspect if several lamps have failed in a shorter period of time but can just fail.These are my thoughts from working on this and similar sets--what have you tried so far?

And you can easily do this yourself.
Theres a little door at the right side if your looking at the front. (left if your looking at the rear) Open that up and youll see another door that has a little latch on it. turn it about a 1/4 turn to the left and it will release that door and pull it straight out. then there is the bulb, and that has a little wire ring that is the release. Pull that up and out.

Thats the error code for the lamp cover not being attached properly or the lamp not installed properly. Check the door cover switch and also insure the lamp is seated fully into its compartment.

Three times blinking indicates problem with lamp cover, please make sure lamp cover has been placed correctly in its position.
