Some keys do not respond

Disconnect and reconnect your computer keyboard, then restart your computer. Sometimes a poor connection can result in keys not working on your keyboard Update the device driver for your keyboard by going to the manufacturer's website of your keyboard, and then download and install the latest driver matching the brand and model number of your keyboard. Disconnect your keyboard from your computer and inspect the pins in the keyboard connector if you have a PS/2 connector. The PS/2 connector for your keyboard has six pins, which connect into a PS/2 port of your personal computer, to allow for communication to and from your keyboard. Straighten any bent pins you may find, by gently using a ballpoint pen. You must replace your keyboard if you see broken pins. Try testing your keys using a different application, such as another word processing program. Keys like the function keys on your keyboard labeled F1 through F12 may not work in one application but will work fine in another. Clean Under Desktop Keys Disconnect your standard desktop keyboard, then press down on a key not working. Slip a car key or a flathead screwdriver underneath the key. Twist the screwdriver or car key until the keyboard key pops off. Use a damp cloth, moist cotton swabs or compressed air to remove dust, hair, and food crumbs under the key. Use only water or rubbing alcohol to moisten the cloth and cotton swabs---other cleaners can damage the plastic of your computer. Position and press down on the key to snap it into place. Repeat this for all of the keys to clean underneath them, if necessary. Clean Under Laptop Keys Turn your laptop off, then use a flathead screwdriver or knife under a key corner, prying the key off gently. You will hear a snap as the key detaches. Remove the key retainer remaining on your laptop using your knife or screwdriver under the corner, then popping it off with a gentle twist. Remove the space bar by pulling it off after your insert the screwdriver or knife underneath the bar. Clean underneath your laptop keys using cotton swabs or a soft cloth dampened with water or alcohol. You can also use compressed air to remove dust, hair and other debris. Replace your laptop keys by placing the key retainer into position. If you cannot remember the position, copy another retainer's position by removing another key. Insert the keypad into the retainer, then position the key over the retainer while pressing down on the key. You should hear the key snap into place. Place your laptop's space bar over the space bar slots, then snap it into place

Hp laptop random shutdown - overheat?

Your CPU is likely overheating. Very likely the thermal conducting material between the CPU chip and the heatsink may have shrunk and now impeades the thermal transfer.
You may need to remove the heatsink and put new thermal paste and perhaps copper shim to restore the thermal contact to the heatsink.

My everex stepnote laptop randomly

I had a similar issue with mine. The wireless adapter has an IRQ issue, which may explain the issue. I would recommend turning it off and replacing it with either a mini PCIe wireless card (such as the intel 3 or 4000 series which are like $8-15 on ebay) or a USB wifi card.http://www.thatsitguys.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=31

I have a everex stepnote

It may be that the display output toggle has been set to "external monitor" ... try Fn+F3 .... to toggle it from your screen, to external monitor to both ... and see if the screen works.
If this doesn't work, connect an external monitor to your computer, and toggle it, to see if the monitor displays the screen contents. If this works, then it's possible that your LCD screen is faulty ("fried")

Everex laptop is running but screen stays black

This sounds like the back light could be out or the display is switched to external.

Heres how to check. Boot it up and let it run. While it is doing this look from the side of the screen. Sort of off centre. You may have to get close and may even have to use a flashlight. What you should see is a ghost image of your normal desktop. When you move your mouse you should be able to see the movement. Might be hard to see but you should see it move. If you see the movement that indicates the backlight or it power supply is out. If you don' tthen it can be the video or just set or forced to an external monitor.

So to check for that you need to use a monitor. The laptop will have a place to plug in the monitor. Plug it in, turn it on. Now turn on the laptop. If you see the screen normally then the problem is back lighting. If you still don't see anything then the problem is the video section. If you press the FN key (lower left) and the function key with the monitor usually F9. This should cycle it through the outputs ie normal screen, external monitor or both.

This is repairable but you really have to watch the cost these days. A back light can be replaced for under $50 in parts plus labour. The video section would require a new main board which will be about $150 and up.If you have warrenty both the backlight and mainboard are covered under that. If you don't then you need to get a couple of estimates for the repair. Compare that to the replacement cost and use that to decide if its worth fixing.

Coffee w/sugar spilled on laptop

Its hard to tell what damage has been done without seeing inside your laptop. But the fault you describe indicates that your hard drive has failed or there's a bad connection.

Hardrives are normally fairly easy to access on a laptop. See if you can take it out, if there's gunge on it give it a clean, and the connector inside and put it back in and give it a go.

Oh......... remove all power sources first.

If that fails, I would recommend taking it to a repair shop. Or you could buy a replacement and install it. But you would have to re-install and operating system as well.
