Hi,
Unfortunately, those sound like the symptoms of a failing hard drive. If you cannot access the files on it, they may be gone for good. You may need to send your hard drive in to a data recovery service, but these are often expensive, time consuming, and are not guaranteed to recover all of your data. There are some tricks you can try as a last ditch effort, however.

It is recommended that you always keep back ups of your files.

My drive wont show on

Sounds like it has the "Click Of Death" if you have something on there that you really need it may be possible to run it for a short while after freezing it (wrapped in plastic film) if you're lucky. More than likely though it is destined for the bin.

Hello there,
Are you using Windows XP or Vista? Anyway, please try to assign a drive letter for your drive. Go to My Computer, right click that icon and then hit Manage. Go to Disk Management for XP and Storage for Windows Vista or 7. Locate the driver and then tell me the status. If it does not have a drive letter, simply right click on it and then select "Assign a Drive Letter" and then follow the wizard.
Let me know how that goes.

New hp laptop with MS 7 sees the drive but does

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and attach it as a "slave" drive in a desktop computer, to see if bypassing the USB-to-disk-drive adapter bypasses the problem.

My computer wont recognize my external hard drve

Try connecting the external hard-drive to a different computer. If it still fails, and it is still under warranty, then exercise the warranty to get it replaced.

If the warranty has expired, open the case, and remove the disk-drive, disconnecting it from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.

Connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if the disk is recognized.
If it is, then the USB-to-disk-drive adapter has failed, and you could go to any computer-store to buy a new external case and adapter, and mount your disk-drive inside the new case, and work with your files.

If the disk-drive is not recognized, check the warranty on the disk-drive itself.

Hard drive flashing

There is a certain amount of very voltage sensitive circuitry in the enclosure and it was damages by over voltage. Your best bet is to replace the enclosure. These are available from China on eBay for around $18. Much less than to have your enclosure repaired.

Computer won't recognize hard drive anymore

The clicking sounds and lack of response makes this sound like a dying hard drive to me, sorry to say.

I would try it on another computer if possible.

There are data retrieval experts but they tend to be expensive, files need to be quite important to make this worthwhile.

How can I get this device to read on an xbox 360?

Step 1: Connect your hard drive to your PC.
Step 2: Create a FAT32 partition on your hard drive. If you’re using less than 32 GB, you can use Windows via “Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer Management”. If you’re using more than 32 GB, you’ll have to use an external program, e.g. Partition Magic.
Step 3: Load all the content you want from your PC onto the external drive. This should consist of files that can be read on the Xbox hard drive.
Step 4: Remove the external hard drive from your PC. Plug it into your Xbox 360 console through the USB port.
Step 5: Go to the Media menu on your Xbox screen. Select "Portable Device" from the menu. All the readable files saved on the external drive should be available to read on your Xbox 360.
N.B. Xbox's connection with an external drive is read-only. You can only read files that are already on the drive after connecting. You can't save game files or anything else on the Xbox main drive onto the external hard drive. Also, USB storage devices cannot be used for Xbox live marketplace content.
