Seagate FreeAgent Go 250 GB USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Drive is sometimes recognized but
This is a common problem with external drives, I have had it happen to Segate, WD, and a few off brand drives. Usually when one of these drives gets flaky, you have 2 options:
1. do a google search on your particular model on how to remove the drive from the case, then install in a desktop computer
2. use disk recovery software to attempt retrieval of files
The first on will work if there is a problem with the driver interface to usb board that is built into your device. By installing in a desktop, you are bypassing this potentially bad part. This step will also make the 2nd option run faster if you have to resort to it.
A good rule of thumb on these devices is to never have only 1 copy of the data.
Good luck retrieving your data!

All data disappeared
It's hard to say from your description what the problem is but the first thing to do is determine the condition of the drive. You can check if there are problems with the drive using the free trial version of http://www.hdtune.com/
If it checks out ok then you can try to recover your data with Recuva it's free http://www.piriform.com/recuva
Or if you need data recovery help this a good choice for low cost and fast data recovery. All data recovery work is performed remotely over the Internet from a boot cd that you download and the best part is they just ask for donations if you are happy with the results: http://FreeDataRecovery.us

My external usb hdd showing
If the unit has mains power, check that it is getting it. Also if it comes with two usb plugs then make sure both are plugged into usb ports on your pc. Try the unit on someone elses pc/laptop. if it works on theirs then your pc has a problem with the usb ports.

Computer does not recognize Seagate
Before you open it (and void your warranty), check to see if it works on another computer. If not the HD is most likely dead, and if you still want to open it up you will probably need a security bit set.

Normally, an external HD's trash is part of the PCs trash bin. By emptying the PC trash you also empty anything in the external HD trash.

How do I Copy files from my hard drvie to the
You can either manually copy files by launching windows explorer (right click on the start button, select "explore"), navigating to your files, select the files, hold down CTRL and then tap C to copy, and then navigate to the FreeAgent External Drive (It should be on the right side of Windows Explorer, named "Agent" or similar), and then hold CTRL, and tap the v button to paste.
Alternatively you can navigate to the FreeAgent drive, where there should be a backup program. Launch the program, enter in the details of what and when to backup, and let it run in the background.

It's probably formatted to the wrong filesystem; Macs prefer HFS+, Windows prefers NTFS, but they both can read and write FAT32. I'd recommend using the Mac's Disk Utility application to reformat the drive to be FAT 32 (but be careful, this will erase the external hard drive, so back up first!)
