Press the Reset button on the inside of the unit with the battery removed. This should solve the Problem. If not you may need to send it in.

Reset button is located under the battery. So remove the battery and loo for the button at the end of the archos where the battery pins make contact. To the right of those and half way down between the pins and the case of the hard drive will be a gold round looking circuit. this is the reset. Press it and off you go.

Don't be afraid! (I was) I was only getting the Green power light on and no further reaction. Wouldn't switch on and I was convinced it was the battery or the usb cable but I read the comments on this site and decided to have a go.
I opened the back and was daunted when I saw the security seal. Was out of warranty anyhow so I thought what the hell! I removed the 2 small screws at the bases of the hard drive and lifted the unit forward. There on the pcb Was the small oval gold disc/button and I push it in with my small screw driver for about 10/20 seconds then put every thing back in place - and Hey Presto - powered up and worked a treat! Thanks to this site and its users from an 'absolute novice' with a little common sense!

Drop a line to the people at www.newmp3technology.com they should be able to sort you out. i know they have screens available for most models including the 704, which may be similar.

I had the same problem and manage to solve it. You need to do the following

a. go to Archos website and download latest firmware and save on your pc
b. turn on 504 and select repair - unit not connected to pcm you will see a screen where you wil be prompted to press DONE (but DONT press it yet!!!!)
c. connect 504 to pc and wait until pc recognise it (it will recognize it this time)
d. copy firmware from pc and paste it to 504 root directory.
e. press done on 504. now when the device restarts you just select Repair and that should work. :)

Try holding down the on/off button for 30 seconds. It should reboot. Next go to the Archos site and download the newest firmware and follow the instructions.

try resetting the device, don't worry you won't lose any files on the device. it is the little brass bubble directly on the circuit board by the battery terminals. hold for at least 10 seconds.

then try the device as normal.

if that doesn't work, run scan disk on the device as a "pc hard drive" select auto repair.

if that doesn't work, try using a program other than windows explorer to copy the files. specifically, i've had very good luck for fast copy. the interface is translated from japanese, just select the proper directories and hit the "excute" button, took me about two minutes to figure that one out. there is also tera copy.

if that doesn't work, try using a syncing software, i recommend allway sync n' go, free for personal use, actually you may want to try this before the copy software. remember that if you change direction in the sync arrow you willnot be copying files back from the device to your computer. i find this to be very useful.

if that doesn't work, i'm really sorry, you're just going to have to use tech support, call on a tuesday evening when it is really slow, but get ready for a wait. i recommend sitting infront of your computer while on hold, at least that way you'll have something to ry more research on.

hold the tv button slightly earlier than holding the power button, first tv then power (while still pressing the tv button). it should first boot up to a normal green ARCHOS screen, then it will enter the recovery mode.

Try to press and hold the reset button (a little 4mm diameter golden button behind the battery right on the microchip) and then turn it on again

im not sure about the docking station but to see movies with out the cinema plug in just add videos that are in .AVI format and u can watch them fine.

its is the same prob. but i am working on it.

I had the same problem. I droped mine and it seems to have messed up my hard drive. i replaced it today and my comp. can now reconize it. i have been trying to contact tech. support to see if it is possible to get the OS back on the PMP. if the Tech support ever picks up my call i will message back with the fix.

if your "reset" button doesn't help at all, this is what you'll do.

If you power on the unit by pressing and holding the TV/LCD button and power
button simultaneously the unit will boot into a recovery screen. Once in this
screen choose "Repair Disk" and follow the on screen instructions.

When prompted, please place the following file into the 'root directory' of
the unit:

before i found this solution, i've already given up on my 504, but now it's back!!!! REBIRTH!!!

The solution is found! There's no need to format your HDD
So.
- Unplug the battery;
- Press and hold the reset button for 20-25 sec;
- Put the battery back to it's place;
- Charge your device (when you plug the cable in, it turns on (note that a blinking lightning icon appears on the charging indicator), then it turns off with it's "shutting down" message, dont pay attention on this, just let it charge for about 10-15 minutes (note that the CHG bulb won't be lit));
- Turn on your device. The CHG bulb is lit, Archos doesn't shut down
- Enjoy

There is nowhere, except in Philadelphia - and they will charge you as much or more than Archos. Mp3 players do not have economical repair services.

Problem fixed by going to 2nd menu group (left click the menu button) display>external display and selecting s-video (this is the cable I use)
