This will not erase any data but it will reset some of the settings.

If this doesn't work, you can go to "Repair and Formatting Tools".

If that doesn't work, you may need to perform a "System Recovery". This WILL ERASE all data and make the device the way it was from the factory.

Take the battery off. Just beside the 4 battery terminal connectors there is a little button about 5 mm (1/4 "). Push it with the tip of a pen for 10 seconds and voila!! Hope this helps.

• the archos website should tell you what to do next

The battery back may now be damaged and have to be replaces.
Try Walmart or Radio shack.

* Press the reset button on the buttom of the device using a papr clip. It should shut it off. then try to turn it on again.

* Download the latest frimware from Archos.com on to the desktop on your computer ( i recommend desktop because it will be easy to find) Then plug the device to a pc Using USB cable. turn the archos on by holding power switch and TV/LCD buttons at the same time until a white screen comes up. it should ask for Usb. if it does pick the ubs. if it does not give you a USB option but these "NO", "REPAIRE", "FORMAT" move the curser to repaire. do not pick the format which will delete all the contents and plugins you have on your device.

after repaire completes it should say done. do not press the done wait until you see the archos connection under My computer. it should normaly come up with name 504 or you will be able to see the archos icon. place the firmware in to the main drirector not under any folder. then press the ok button to confirm the "done" device will power off and start with a white screen again but this time it will update the firmware and restart do not unplug the Usb cable until the update completes. It should restart again and load the normal user interface. Your device should be fine and back to normal.

Disconnect the battery for few seconds and replace back again, then turn on. I had the same problem and that was what I did.

I bought songs from I tunes and I cant get my MP3 to syncronize and download the music. When I plug in to computer drive shows it there and music there, but when I unplug no music is found on my MP3. Please help me

Description of the reset button is that it is a round, gold color "bump" smaller than 1/4", almost flush with the circuit board.

This problem seems to occur when the device overheats. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but most videos set at 720 by 480 wont play when the device is left running for a long period of time. The smaller video files, however, still play. I think it deals with the amount of system resources required for such files to play. If you turn the device off completely by going to menu, power, and turn off device, and leave it sit for 30 minutes, all files should play properly when you turn it back on.

As a suggestion, DO NOT leave your Archos powered on and on the dvr station. This causes the device to constantly run, and if you havent noticed the Archos operates at an extremely high temperature.
Also try the reset button just as a back up to what i have put. Karlos

I had the exact same problem, I looked a bit on the net and I found the answer. What you have to do is push the reset button when your archos isn't plugged on. The reset button is located behind the battery ( you'll have to the remove the battery ) near the pins that connects the archos to its battery. It looks like a gold circle and if you push it you'll see it's a button. After pushing the reset button try to put the battery on back again and replug your archos, it should work normally now.

I had the same problem and manage to solve it. You need to do the following

a. go to Archos website and download latest firmware and save on your pc
b. turn on 504 and select repair - unit not connected to pcm you will see a screen where you wil be prompted to press DONE (but DONT press it yet!!!!)
c. connect 504 to pc and wait until pc recognise it (it will recognize it this time)
d. copy firmware from pc and paste it to 504 root directory.
e. press done on 504. now when the device restarts you just select Repair and that should work. :)

Download Magic Video Converter from www.isohunt.com and change the video to WMP Standard 8. You don't need 1.25 GB vids for the archos, it's too high a quality for such a small screen.
