Camera won't show the image on the screen when
You don't. The D40 works as SLRs have worked for half a century. Only more recent dSLRs (Nikon started with the D3 and D300) have the LiveView capability that lets you handle your dSLR as a point&shoot.

Every shot is very dark
If every shot is very dark, make sure to set the apperture higher and a slower shutter speed. This will allow your camera to acquire more light coming in to the camera.

D40 with a Nikon AF-5 DX 55-200 lens will not auto
I had a similar problem with one that I bought. and come to find out, the gears internally in the lens where broken. I would return the lens, and get another one. Also when you go to buy a lens for your camera make sure that you bring the camera with you to test the zoom before you buy it.
Just FYI you also need to remember that with a smaller zoom your focus time will be slower, and it will take getting use to, unlike the larger zooms, you are trying to focus on a large area but being very detailed at the same time.

Why won't my Nikon D40 stay in infra red remote
The infrared sensor consumes battery power whenever it is waiting for a signal. By default the D40 will time out after one minute.
If you go into the Custom Menu and select item 17, you can change the timeout to 5, 10, or 15 minutes.

Timer?
Here is the button to activate the timer (circled in yellow). After it's been pressed, then push the shutter button and you'll have a few seconds (can set the timer seconds in settings) before the shutter releases and takes the shot.

My images are coming out with a blue tint
It sounds like the white balance is set to tungsten or incandescent. That is for old style light bulbs. They make a very orange light, and the blue cancels the orange. In daylight you need to set the white balance to daylight.

How do you remove the white areas of a shot from
What you're seeing is blown-out highlights. These are areas of your picture where the bright stuff (highlights) have been so overexposed (blown-out) that all detail has been lost. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but usually is. The proper fix is to reduce exposure slightly. Lost details in the dark areas are usually considered more acceptable than lost details in the bright areas.
If you simply don't want to see the blinking black/white parts of your picture, simply press up/down on the multiselector to select a different view of your picture.

Why can I not see the pictures I have taken?
First, make sure that there is a memory card on the camera itself, the camera has a mode that will allow you to take sample shots even if you have no memory card.
If there is a memory card, make sure that you press on the Play button to be able to view the pictures you took.
