Amana microwave

Remove the cover from the microwave. Where the door latches are you will find a couple small black switches. The buttons on the switches will be depressed when the door is closed. Check the switches to see if any are burned up or broken. They should have somewhat of a snap feeling when depressed with your fingers. If one is bad the machine will not heat. Replace the switch.

AMANA ACM1580AW WNONT HEAT

If the inside light, cooling fan, and turntable are not all coming on when you hit "Start" to cook, then you likely have a bad top or bottom door switch, or that switch's mount is loose, misaligned, or broken. See these help files: http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/safety.txt http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/disassembly.txt http://031d26d.namesecurehost.com/mwd/doorsw.txt If the inside light, cooling fan, and turntable are all coming on when you hit "Start" to cook, then chances are you have a failed high voltage diode or magnetron or a bad connection at the magnetron. There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Our door switch help file is here.

Amana convection/micro #AMC1580AB popping SOUND and sparks

That would be ACM1580AB, just in case that was throwing off your searches.

If the noise came from within the oven cooking cavity, it may be grease of food on or behind the waveguide cover (called a canopy in this case) which is fastened to the wall of the oven with two screws, apparently.

The cover and the area behind it must be clean.

If the canopy is burned or damaged it must be replaced.

If the sound was coming from behind the controls or on the right side under the outer cover, then it is probably a bad high voltage rectifier diode.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html
(even if the magnetron passes these tests, it can still be bad. If you have high voltage and the diode is good, assume the magnetron is bad)

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

The actual service manual (with installation & operation info, too) is free to download here.

Your owner's manual is availabel free here.

Light bulb change

If the solution below does not work, please reply back with your brand and model number so we can help you.

If there's no obvious removable cover over the bulb (and the owner's manual doesn't address it) some disassembly may be required.

Always unplug a microwave before removing or installing any bulbs.

If it's an over the range type, remove the vent grille across the top and see if bulbs can be accessed there. There may be a panel on the bottom covering the light(s), instead.

If not, chances are you'll have to remove it from the wall, then remove the outer cover. If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

If you don't have your instructions, please reply back with your brand and model number.

Once it's out of the wall, the outer cover (wrapper) will need to be removed, just as you'll need to do on a counter top model.

The screws you need to remove should be pretty obvious, and a special driver (such as a T20H Torx type or GTXH20-100) may be needed.

Be sure to put all the screws back in the right holes, since some may be special grounding screws.

Bulbs can be had in most grocery stores, hardware stores, home improvement centers, and big box or department stores.

Many models use halogen lamps. You must not touch the new one with your bare skin, as the oils will shorten the bulb life.

Does Not Shut-Off Completely

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount, or a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

If you someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa: http://tinyurl.com/yzjozk

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here: http://tinyurl.com/gv383

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel, which is very helpful when troubleshooting.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.
