You have learned a painful lesson the hard way - never do an upgrade or firmware upgrade unless it is absolutely necessary to do so. Often, the procedure fails and you are left with a nice paper weight. Bet you that you did not save the original firmware (or were not given the chance to do so). Its a common problem for this model.
1. Is there any flash of light from the backlights (best viewed from the back of the TV with the back removed)?

2. Have you tried shining a flashlight on the screen to see if a display is present when power up?

There are three possible failures.

1. A failure in the main board.

2. A failure in the LCD panel / Tcon

3. A failure in the inverter / backlight system. This could be as simple as a blown fuse.
Thos three failures would mean it needs to be service.call RCA

I would just replace it and stop the future bleeding of money unless you have the manuals and test gear and the training to really know what you are doing.

Update the software. It is necessary.

Fault to the main power supply regulator section. It is not oscillating. Either it will be a separate board, or the part of main board. This is true to most of the flat panel TV power supply boards; irrespective of its brand and screen size.

Look first to see if you have audio when a DVD etc. is connected to the audio/video input this set has on the rear.

Did you get this from the RCA website, if so call assistance and get RCA to help you through the upgrade.

Noise in 5 volt standby voltage may have already corrupted eeprom. Change the two 680uf/16 volt and other bloated caps in power supply to see if tv is still salvagable.

Hmmm, if you're using an antenna then go into the menu on the TV and hit the Scan for channels button. If it's a Cable box then make sure it is connected correctly and on the right input.
