I did notice that you posted this under AKAI LCT3201 TD 32in. LCD Television TV/DVD Combo troubleshooting... I do not remember posting to anything other than the problems concerning AKAI LCT 2715 27in TV's. But in any case this could be the same issue for you as I have noticed a common failure point on AKAI TV's is due to the poor power supply components they use.

usually need to hit the zoom function on the remote to change the display settings sometime there are up to 6 different settings and some programs cannot be adjusted out of because of station restrictions

If you mean words here it is called closed captions---look in the set for that feature and if highlighted or on use the remote to turn it off.

If you have tried using different input devices, looked for loose contactsin power outlet, RC Jack, cable and connectors, the TV might need service.

you have bad capacitors, if you dont know what those are, then I am sorry -its gonna cost you to fix

It's common for capacitors on the power supply board to go bad (tops will swell up) and cause the same problem. these new LCD tv's are all very bad when it comes to power surges.
