First make sure that the current Source or Input is set to TV. This is usually the only reason for the error message you see. To select the source, look for a Source or Input button on the original remote. If you have an universal remote with a button with the Source/Input label, you may need to try alternative codes to make the button work. Simple answer to volume problem i have found there is a demo button on the tv which automatically turns everything down.

You should only ever take the back of any electrical device if you know what you are doing. A lot of people have been electrocuted whilst working on electrical devices or they have cause damage leaving the TV useless. If you know someone that has has experience of disassembling electrical devices or repairing them, ask them to do the cleaning.

unplug. Press and hold power button 10-15 sec's then repower see if ok. Most tv's will go into standby if there is no signal detected.
