Battery problem

Tried two different types of standard AA alkaline batteries (sony and tesco brands) and within 20 seconds of putting the batteries in, straight from the packet, the camera stops operating and says "change the batteries". have cycled through 8 brand new batteries and the same thing happens each time, do i have a defective camera? This problem has been present since i bought it 2 months ago, just got round to addressing it. it has only ever lasted for a longer time (about a day of shooting, 200 pictures) when i first used it with the supplied batteries, which were standard alkaline too.

Remove batteries and clean contacts of battery's host (include cover). Check as well that contacts are not bended and didn't lost their springiness. Good luck!

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error. They won't work for all cases, but they're worth a try if the camera's no longer under warranty:

Put the camera in picture review mode. Click through the pictures until you find the one you wish to delete. Then press the trashcan button on the back of your camera to delete just that picture. Select OK if asked to erase this picture.

Lens error, restart camera. The lens won't close, and won't extend all the way either. How do I fix this?

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to corr
ect it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

Canon Camerawindow won't start when camera plugged in (Norton?)

I'm using a whitebox PC running XP. I've been using Norton Internet Security 2009 for several months without troubles.

However, in the last week or so, something has changed......

When we plug the camera into the USB cable, the PC no longer auto-runs the Canon camerawindow software. I'm guessing that Norton has auto-updated a signature file and is now inhibiting the standard Canon camerawindow software from running. I've tried turning off lots of protection options without success.

I've also posted the problem at http://www.fixya.com/HTTPHandlers/mail_dir.ashx?url=687474703A2F2F7777772E66697879612E636F6D2F54687265616441736B65722E617370783F746869643D32393439363434266D736769643D3730393134363526747970653D636C69636B266D61696C69643D3726726E643D302E353533393239393735353134323638&mt=9&li=2&met=1 then saw this instance as well.

CANON IXUS 561
Lens sometimes does not extend and error message 'lens error restart camera' appears when camera is turned on. This does not work without several tries and much button pressing. Problem is not caused by finger(s) in front of lens barrel.

I have a Canon Powershot A560. The date and time

I have a Canon Powershot A560. The date and time stamp do not work. I checked the manual and it says to replace the battery located under the flip-up panel on the left side of the camera. I can not remove the cover plate. Where can I get help to fix this problem? I need the camera on October 13th.

Think your problem is that you are looking in the wrong spot. Don't know why your manual is telling you to look there (are you sure your manual is for the A560)?
Your CR1220 date/time battery is located in the regular battery compartment. Look right beside your AA batteries. You'll see a little flap labeled "CR1220". Slide this open with your fingernail, and take the little coin battery down to your local drugstore to buy a replacement.

Here is the suggestion:

The battery compartment cover and the design of the metal electrical contacts is flawed. These acontacts re made of springy metal, but there isn't enough force to press the metal securely against the battery. The end of each contact has a metal tab that prevents it from being bent further out to increase the tension. These contacts are the cause of the low-battery warning.

Some fixed the camera by inserting tiny pieces of plastic foam (i.e., spongy, like from "foam rubber" pillows) under the metal contacts. Used a small screwdriver to gently bend up each metal strip, and stuffed a small piece of foam under it. This provides enough force to keep the contact securely touching the battery.
or You can also try the "toothpick trick" as described in various forums, and it seems to be working. There is a belief that there is a design flaw with the battery compartment door, or the springs that press against the battery. By wedging a toothpick under the battery contacts, it seems to force the contacts into the battery, seemingly helping with the problem that many are facing in this and other forums.
