I have a MacBook Pro and a HP Photosmart c4280 printer. The printer and copying works fine but it won't scan!! the LCD screen on the printer says "USB not connected" when it is!! HELP please. Thank you.

I had the same problem. The thing is I was pressing the scan button on the printer and getting the lovely "USB not connected" message. However, if you open the printer icon in the dock (Mine is "HP Photosmart C4200 series") and click the Scanner button in the upper right hand corner, then click "New Scan," voila! presto! and all is right with the world again.
Yes, it is obnoxious that HP made a defective scanner button, and I may download the driver again when I get a chance. But yay for quick fixes!

how do i install a printer cartridge for the HP photosmart C4280 AIO
Posted by dbk2339 on
To replace the print cartridges
1. Make sure the HP All-in-One is on.
CAUTION: If the HP All-in-One is off when you open the print cartridge door to
access the print cartridges, the HP All-in-One will not release the cartridges for
changing. You might damage the HP All-in-One if the print cartridges are not
docked safely when you try to remove them.
2. Make sure you have letter or A4 unused plain white paper loaded in the input tray.
3. Open the print cartridge door.
The print carriage moves to the far right side of the HP All-in-One.
4. Wait until the print carriage is idle and silent, and then lightly press down on a print
cartridge to release it.
If you are replacing the tri-color print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from the
slot on the left.
If you are replacing the black or photo print cartridge, remove the print cartridge from
the slot on the right.
1 Print cartridge slot for the tri-color print cartridge
2 Print cartridge slot for the black and photo print cartridges
5. Pull the print cartridge toward you out of its slot.
6. If you are removing the black print cartridge in order to install the photo print cartridge, store the black print cartridge in the print cartridge protector or an airtight plastic container.
7. Remove the new print cartridge from its packaging and, being careful to touch only
the black plastic, gently remove the plastic tape by using the pink pull tab.
1 Copper-colored contacts
2 Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing)
3 Ink nozzles under tape
CAUTION: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or ink nozzles. Touching
these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
8. Slide the new print cartridge forward into the empty slot. Then gently push the upper
part of the print cartridge forward until it clicks into the socket.
If you are installing the tri-color print cartridge, slide it into the left slot.
If you are installing a black or photo print cartridge, slide it into the right slot.

Maintain the HP All-in-One
9. Close the print cartridge door.
If you installed a new print cartridge, the HP All-in-One prints a print cartridge
10. When prompted, ensure plain white paper is loaded in the input tray, then press the
button next to OK.
NOTE: If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the print
cartridges, the alignment will fail. Load unused plain white paper into the input
tray, and then try the alignment again.
11. Place the page print side down on the scanner glass and then press the button next
to OK to scan the page.

I'm able to print an alignment page fine, but the scanner scans the alignment page but doesn't recognize it??? WTF am I doing wrong?

I have had the same problem. When I was trying to fix it, noticed that my color cartridge was almost empty. I understood the alignment page was not prepared well. After changing cartridge, I prepared a new alignment page, then tried it and it worked

I changed the balck ink cartridge. I got a message to align. to do that I had to print an alignment page which only came out blue and not multicolored, like it is supposed to be. Nevertheless, I used this to align and message on printer said alignment page not detected? What do I do? How do I get a multicolored alignment page?

I finally got mine to run through the following process:
Pulled back out the black cartridge I had replaced and put it back in
Pulled out the color cartridge and put back in.
CLosed the cover and was prompted to print alignment page.
Placed alignment page on glass with 4 blocks to the left (as depicted on alignmnet sheet)
Press Okay to start alignment
Alignment was FINALLY succesful.
If I were to put anything on this troubleshooting, it was pulling BOTH cartridges back out and resetting them

Hp All In One - keeps saying USB not connected. I have unplugged and plugged back in several times. Even changed the USB port used on the hard drive.

Use the scan commands from the HP device manager, not the printer.

HP Photosmart C4280.
I have tried taken the cartridges out and replacing them. There has been no fading in the printing so I don't think the ink has run out and I imagine that there would have been a message saying they were about to run out.
Any ideas please?

Did you run the print sample page used to align the print cartridges by scanning the test page?

lost cd for installation for HP Photosmart C4280

Greetings. We're trying to service a client's similar model. After disassembling it, we found a worn composite gear located at the ink cartrigde cleaner moving plattform (located at the front right corner of the product; it has 2 rubber cushions inside that protects the cartridge's nozzles), and a little "L" shaped plastic piece with a hooked end, located near the paper out tray (we suppose it's used in pair with a similar one for pushing the printed paper out in its tray). We substituted the gear, glued back the plastic hooked piece, and reconnect all wire harnesses, leaving clear the sides of the equipment to see it working. We observed the motor assy. located at the cartrigde cleaner unit overturning and causing the rubber cushions plattform to get stuck (therefore causing gear damage). Then, because of this failure, the cartridge carriage returned violenty to the left corner, causing breaking of the little plastic hooks (they get out during the equipment startup, but only after the cartridge carriage returns to the right corner). To isolate the problem, we removed the ribbon cable of the cleaner box motor during startup; that eliminated the violent carriage left return, but the error still flashes on the product's LCD. We have concluded the main board (PWB), Q1636-20261A, is the culprit. Can anyone agree with us, or have another view to the right solution? Thanks in advance. well......my hp c4280 all in one printer keeps showing this message that says: "carriage jam clear carriage jam . press ok.........can anybody help me? i already tried cleaning the inside and put in new ink......! _stuck_!

I am using a macbook and my Photosmart C4280 will not print text or word documents. All the pages come out blank. I set the founts to black. However It will print pictures. When all the calibration checks are done, they all pass. the test pages work. I uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled new driers. no luck.

I resolved this by going to "tools" -> "Clean Print Head".

Hi - please help! My HP Photosmart C4250 displays a message saying "Printer Cartridge(s) missing or not detected" though I've just put a new cartridge into the machine. How do I fix this so I can print again?

There may be debris that is blocking the communication between the cartridge and the printer, especially if you are using a remanufactured cartridge. Remove the cartridge and unplug the printer from the power supply. Take a little bit of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab and wipe off the contacts on the cartridge as well as the contacts inside of the printer. Allow both to dry for a few minutes before plugging the printer back in and re-installing the cartridge. This should clear up any miscommunication between the two.
