Amana SXD22 SxS evaporator coils

You will need to remove the food and shelves from your freezer and then the back panel. Look for ice buildup on the coils and around the cold air tubes that allows cold air to enter your refrigerator. If you do have frost then you should unplug your refrigerator and defrost your freezer. You can use a hair dryer to hurry the process along, but be ready with a large sponge and bucket to deal with the water. The defrost sytem is usually made of three basic components: The defrost heater, the thermostat and the timer. You can check the heater and thermostat with an ohm meter - if you have continuity - less than infinity on your meter then they are normally good. If not replace which ever one didn't have continuity. If both are good then it is the timer and you will need to order one and replace it. You can do this by going to www.searspartsdirect.com and plug in your refrigerator model number in and pull up the diagram for you refrigerator. Those three parts will be in the freezer compartment - it will also give you an idea of what they look like if you are having a problem in identifying them.

Now for the good news. Your refrigerator will work without them for a week or so now that you have defrosted your freezer! So you can plug it back in and let it get cold and just wait for your delivery. NOTE: Suggest you take a digital photo of how it looks so if you can't remember later, you have something to refer to.

Ice forms at the bottom of freezer. I have

The evaporator coils frost up in normal use and every eight hours or so the entire unit shuts down and the defrost heater comes on to melt the frost. This cycle last about 20 minutes. The melted frost drips into a drain pan and through a drain tube to the drain tray under the freezer/refrigerator where it's evaporated by the condenser fan.

Your drain tube may be stopped up with ice at the upper end because it drains too slow because it's stopped up at the lower end in the evaporator pan under the unit at the floor. It can get dust and mold in it. Once you get the ice out at the top a little pressure with a turkey baster will usually clear it out. Flushing it out with hot water and clorox may help.
Make sure it drains quick enough to prevent refreezing. . The drain should be located below the evaporator coils on the inside of the freezer at the bottom of the rear cover.

Amana Side By Side -

It sounds like you have a defrost problem.

DEFROST PROBLEM
The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

I have an amana ars

Hello gizzard28,

The only way I know to trouble shoot the fan is to go in there and open up the fan compartment and see if it is spinning. Most of the time if the Freezer is freezing and the fridge is not colling your problem is with the fan.

The Evaporator Fan motor is beneath the ice maker assembly. You will need to remove the cover and plug the unit in and see if the fan is still running. If the fan is not running and the coil is frozen up you will need to follow this TIP to defrost and change the fan.

If the fan is running you will need to find out which control is out there are three of them that control the temperature of the unit. They are two are located in the fridge on the side of left side of the fridge 1/4 up and 1/4 down. There is also a air filter that may be clogged on the lower left side of the fridge that will stop the airflow.
Here is a link to a blow up diagram of all of the parts to your unit.

Thank you for choosing FixYa.com

Freezer not cold enough to freeze food and ice

Hi first thing you want to check is if the freezer is frosted up in the back, also the center mullion/separator between the refrigerator and the freezer and see if it is warm to the touch. If it has frost you are looking at a defrost problem, if its warm in the middle your looking at dirty condenser or bad condenser fan motor. If neither of these are present check to see if fan is running in the frreezer, and if its and none of these other symptoms are presenst you could have a freon leak or sealed system issue.

My Amana side by side fridge/freezer is dripping

The defrost is not working.Or the ice frost is got collected on the evaporator cooling the freezer section.Try manual defrost procedure first. The procedure is as follows:---
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. It will take near to 4 hours to get run in its proper cooling cycle. Then check, if the problem returns again. If the same problem occurs then it's defrost problem. The defrost board and the defrost thermostat/heater is not functioning properly and it has to be checked and replaced.

You can get the required parts from online sites like:---

www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site.---------This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.
