its PC,
PC have many layers, of resets. (not counting lost BIOS passwords of any kind,, that adds to the list , )
layer 1, is BIOS reset, seen clearly in the BIOS pages.
says there, go back to factory defaults (just BIOS)
layer, 2: windows, but you never said which one? XP,Vista, W7/8/10?

To reset windows, there is no such thing, in windows at all.
ask MS that and get that answer, (then tells how, with media)
That means the actual windows, running has no reset.
(but one can spend a week or life time cleaning it....)

what does this RESET, is the HP recovery process.
AKA: reLOADING windows from scratch.

the next step for me is carbon dating your PC,
it's 12 years old now, 2006
but that is the CUSP year that HP started doing F11 KEY recoveries.

so that means i must read the manual to you
here goes.
bingo Page B12. see link at end, 1st google hit, btw.
power on and hammer F11, key verbatim.
this works and takes you back to 2006 with all data gone (yours)
and all added APPS gone, not HP apps there DAY1, those be OK
(reality 101)
now how can this fail, sure, easy as cherry pie it can
here is the list.
  • you changed out the HDD from 2006 to now,
  • you upgraded the PC OS not using HP disks or HP media kits. (boom)
  • your HDD is bad. run full disk tests now. most this old are bad
  • the HDD partition called HP recovery is damaged. super common on 12 year old PC.
  • the PC is sick, (huge list here , hardware!!)

Im guessing you meant black screen totally never text there.
does the monitor work on other PC as it must?? simple no?
if yes, it is good and the unstated PC is bad.
if not, the monitor is bad, if this old monitor is very old
2 things fail.
1: CCFL lamps inside all died long ago. 2010 or older.
2: the screen saver inside IT is turned on, turn that off.
push the menu button on the LCD monitor.
then in the OSD turn off sleep TIMER clock..

lets say unstated PC is dead.
1: is the fans dead,? if desktop 2 fans must be good, spin and blow air and not be packed up in lint as most old PC are.
heard ,seen to turn, and felt to blow.(air flow must happen)
2: does the DVD tray eject.

CQ57 what, it has full service tag.
what is the tag tell you. post that please.
http://pcdied.com/TAG-jive/tag.html

with that the manual on your PC is 100x time more easy to find
on that matches perfectly is the correct book.
and then all things you can push is covered

here is my wild guess. this?>
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/compaq-presario-cq57-200-notebook-pc-series/5091489/model/5111956/manuals

are you asking for all keys to glow in the dark
or asking how to type blindly in the dark, be so nice of you to tell why you need this feature, no?
or only the normal keys,
caps lock.
Num lock.
name a key or some.
the above manual shows no such thing
why do you expect this.?
others have it and you dont and therefore want it?
others have differnent PCs.
others have disktop and then bought $100 keyboard that does that from CORSAIR. like mine ,now.

Compaq Computers... | Answered on May 01, 2018

ask them ,ask instrgram we are fixya not them
we dont write the code nor do policy for them
and can change in SECONDS.

Compaq Computers... | Answered on May 01, 2018

ok we finally get the model
"Cq61 420us" made 2009, not too old.
I cant see your screen to be sure where it is locked. this PC has UEFI technology
and as such and turned on , only HP can unlock this device.

the exact message seen is not stated
"user lock codes" bios or windows locked?
do you see the windows login screen at all?
now we go to HP, they own COmpaq.100%
and ask

HP has a support page

https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/compaq-presario-cq61-400-notebook-pc-series/4074240/model/4121168/manuals

ask HP.com how to reset it.
there is a way, but fixya is NOT HP.Com
sorry, we are not HP.

ask here

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/forums/searchpage/tab/message?q=Cq61+420us&collapse_discussion=true

see others asking there?
sure.

did you do the HP long reset first?
battery large out
then line cord off
push power on for 30 seconds
release.
not use just AC power , as the 9 year old battery will be bad, and worse shorted.
leave the huge battery out for now. run on AC>
then tell the helper all words on the screen
all logos. all graphics seen there,
even if the w7 log on screen shows.
then we can proceed.

Compaq Computers... | Answered on Apr 29, 2018

restat?
stacked?
i have no idea these words? elaborate please .
tell what you do right and it does, wrong (a story)

my wild guess is the touch pad is failing
and no usb mouse attached,(hand held mouse)
that?
what OS is this , XP?

The mouse pad can be bad.
so can the mouse pad driver be corrupted , missing or wrong one installed.

start by telling the helper what OS,
click the (CP) control panel, click system'
the OS you run is presented to you there, in words.
windows what.
then CP (again, then click device manager)
under "Mice and other pointing devices."
see the mouse pad there, the driver there must not be
missing
or red or yellow marks ore UNKNOWN.

there are more tests and actions, but I stop here,
or get it repaired in a PC repair shop. (captain obvious sorry)

when does this error happen
1: boot black screens before the windows login screen.?
2: after boot and login, and disktop shows.?
3: does it only happen running apps. or running IE11.
4: only doing what? fill in the blank here _______?

but this PC is 10 years old
and needs a new RTC coin cell.
and you need to run HDD tests, if it dont boot.

terry's link above is correct one to real HP.
and very good.
but COMPAQ facts are hard to find today.
this old.

is this a BIOS password screen , showing system disabled, if yes that is only cured by direct help from HP ,they have a magic back door password
for all old PC by them (HP/compaq)
next time show a photo of errors, 10x more easy.

NO PC stated ,wow now that is hard , no? 1984 to 2018 PCs (1000s of types made !)
compaq to 2013 ends.
NO OS stated, windows, yes?, what windows, XP, vista ,what?

seems to me, the BIOS barfs on your Processor.
my guess is you changed mother boards, and used the wrong processor.? (or the reverse)
learn that the BIOS must be able to recognize the processor in the POST process.
(for sure lots of causes other)
does it do that (laptop) with the main battery the huge heavy battery , that is now shorted and dead.?
you post and not even say desk or laptop. wow.
is it a Proliant Server? or Z600 with 2 non matching Xenon processors, gee, must I guess it all?>
why not just post your service tag data.
and say what OS is running, even windows servers.

the HP manuals on your PC clearly state what processor on that exact model and P/N on the service tag.
clear as day.
as will the hp parts surfer.
varies by country too.
see this, if you answer all the questions there, bingo what yours had and what processor options are supported.
on newer PC HP 10 years or less the BIOS update page also lists added processors under"details" there you go.

had this laptop myself, you need to remove all the drivers for the wifi and delete the files and folders.. download the driver from HP, reboot the laptop and it should install the windows driver. reboot again and then install the HP driver, when you have done this and its working make sure windows cannot update drivers ever again as windows installs wrong drivers. windows 10 is prone to installing the updated drivers that are not compatible with this model. like mouse pad. max version is 18. windows puts 19 on and it makes over driver incompatible.

Compaq Computers... | Answered on Mar 12, 2018

no PC stated, (model)?
no OS stated, windows what.?

that means the drivers are wrong for this PC and its unstated OS.
you do know compaqs go back to 2001
and hp portables back to 1984,
we can not guess PC models, and they are not all the same.
or means corrupted OS, or virus infected or worse.

the word compaq means little and the name ended in 2013

thanks but............. and is and Obsolete PC. at HP and MS.
sr1902uk (England?)
  1. what OS? drivers match a OS, XP?
  2. sure some makers of mobo offer drivers that HP ended. sure.
  3. so does the unstated NIC chip maker offer drivers but not for all OS in most cases.
  4. The best way to work on old PC is run the PCI scanner(ask)
  5. identify the chip maker and model (ven=x dev=z)
  6. then we can get any driver, for any OS if the chip maker has one, and many dont. for newer OS. (and ther reverse)
  7. Finding drivers for old PC is not easy, (for me sure) but for most, it's very hard and the risk of getting virus high.!!
  8. ask how to do it, using the scanner , lacking HP support.

Compaq Computers... | Answered on Feb 23, 2018

1) Is the battery charged?
2) If OK, plug in power cable and switch the power off and on at the socket.
3) Contact HP using the link below:

CQ-nnnnn what is nnnnn , may Cq57 made, all different nnnnnn
QC-100,.-200.,300, 400, series
your service tag tells you the full model number.
nor the OS (unstated)
XP, VISTA, W7 or W8?
this is what was used for the full series of production runs.
and they are NOT THE SAME.
tell what BACKLIT means. LEDs dead but at least name ONE>?

Please tell the helper this.
what OS first.?
tell exactly what Backlits (lights) fail, name them.
caps lock or ? what? give examples of what fails and what you are attempting to do..
on my newer HP, there are no keyboard lamps at all
not one but the HP has back panel that glows for that.
but needs the HP software loaded to make that work
only HP software works on that feature, period.

what operating system is this.?

the CQ57-400 is the last series is this it. why must i guess?
support for it is limited to this.

ill guess 400 for you as 1 example
then ill guess w7 32b
then you see this and load all these driver.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/compaq-presario-cq57-400-notebook-pc-series/5186820

now il guess 100
here
https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/selfservice/compaq-presario-cq57-100-notebook-pc-series/5059083

looks like last one made was 2012 (Compaq ended in 2013 at HP)
so has support until 2022. at HP.com
load all your drivers for you PC on the HP page.
skip BIOS. (line)

the problem here is HP used 2 processors here.
Intel
and AMD
mixing drivers up is problematic. here.
takes skills to do this.
why not ask at HP do this is.
real HP forums.... BINGO?

This depends what version of Windows you are running, if you are running an older version, say Windows Vista, there is a known bug with the ISATAP Adapter, essentially it is an IPv6 protocol, and is not needed. It should have no impact on the operation of your wireless card and is completely fine to use with the yield sign. It may have been there for some time before you noticed. The connectivity is most likely unrelated. If there is a yield sign next to you wireless adapter i would recommend re-installing the driver. You will need to search google for the driver and re-install. Sometimes manufacturers will have drivers on their websites and you simply enter you laptop model and year and select wireless card. Other times you will have to do a thorough search on google. Dont download any program that will search your computer for missing drivers, they are a scam. Try searching for your model number and Compaq. If you cant find exact model number of your laptop, a general Compaq driver may work.

Can you still connect through wired ethernet cable? What do you mean by wont connect? Do you mean connect but there is no internet? Or you can see the wireless network but not connect? or you cant see any wireless networks at all? I have also run into issues where the saved network configuration is corrupted, and trying to join a network and enter the password is futile, even though I have previously joined and it is a trusted network. In this instance, I deleted all network settings and all saved configurations associated with this network and joined again from scratch, which rejoined first time.

I am assuming you are installing Windows 8 as this message is related to Secure boot on Windows 8.

Secure Boot needs a System with UEFI supported BIOS and Secure Boot Enabled in the bios. Secure boot requires drivers to be signed and certified to run with Windows 8. Some of your hardware may not be supported because of this, and thus Windows will not boot, and shut down to prevent damage. See this Microsoft link for more details:
Secure Boot Overview

Try re-installing the application, if this does not work then have a look at the publishers website for FAQ's and the forum, they can be very helpful.

NO PC stated, just compaq,, 1984 compaq,? first one.
must we guess what you have?
NO OS stated, we guess that too? wow.
windows ? if yes, what windows, we cant guess that ever. (even linux uses and OS/2 on some)

no statement of what you are doing? PC do lots of things. endless.
my guess Ethernet cable fails>? using CAT5/6 cable?

if the modem is dead on 2 PC, wired
call the ISP it is their issue.
if the 1 pc ONLY fails on that modem
then that PC drivers are bad. if wired
if wifi 20 more things, complex it is ,ask if doing that.
