I need to know more about your problem, would you mind if I ask you to let me know the exact problem? You mean the video/picture shown on the screen is not correct, like twisted or tracking or not normal when playing from the Dvd Recorder? There are several possibilities, first install another dvd recorder on your system using same cable and connect it on the same port where the current Dvd recorder is installed. Play any video and check if the problem persists or not. If not then, the problem must be with the Dvd recorder's Lens. You need to replace the lens. I would recommend buying another since repairing or replacing will cost you nearly the cost of buying a new one. If the same problem persists with another Dvd write/recorder, then the Port must be bad or the cable is the faulty. Try with another cable and on another Port (maybe ide or sata connectors on the motherboard which suits your dvd drive).

Observe under the tray. (The tray comes out for the disk)
There is a SMALL hole. Just big enough for a paper clip to fit into it.
Take a paper clip, straighten it out, leave the last U-shape for a handle to hang onto.
Gently push the paper clip into the hole. Your tray will open. This is a manual override.
Readable DVD's but not CD's
That is a faulty lens. The lens reads DVD and CD on different laser beam frequencies. To read the TOC initial track the lens must focus on the laser beam reflected by the disk.
If the lens is opaque, scratched or dirty, sometimes it can focus on DVD but not on CDs or the opposite.
Try using a cleaner disk, if that does not work buy a replacement drive. Today you can get a dual layer DVD RW for less than $30.
Can't read CD but can read DVD
This is not uncommon. I have seen it often. It is a sign that the unit is about to fail, and needs to be replaced.
I don't know where you are, but around where I live, these dual layer DVD RW drives retail for less than 30 dollars. They usually come with software and are not difficult to install.
Beware of ESD, however, whenever you are working on the inside of a pc. ESD (electo static discharge) can destroy the insides of your machine without you knowing it until it's too late.

Reads and writes cds,reads dvds but does not burn dvds,
This drive is normally supplied with a couple of Dells.
(because of compatibility) Inspiron 700m,710m
If you have another machine for testing?
check the disk for contents to see if the data burn happened,
this will explain a few things in your processes.
Uninstall/Reinstall the drive and reboot then try again.

Problem is with iTunes
hi try this:
The intention is to remove all iTunes and Quicktime software references. The following steps remove the software traces and worked on my machine.
1. Using add/remove programs uninstall Quicktime (click on Start ?> Settings ?> Control Panel ?> Add/Remove Programs)
2. Using add/remove programs uninstall iTunes
3. Right click on My Computer, use Search and remove all programs named Quicktime
4. Right click on My Computer, use Search and remove all programs named iTunes (except your iTunes download, so you won?t have to sit through another long download session).
5. Left click on Start, click Run, type ?regedit?, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, click on SOFTWARE, and remove the Apple Programs folder (you may want to check in case you have other Apple applications, but all I had were iTunes and Quicktime in my Apple folder).
Steps 1 through 5 should remove all traces of the software and now you can install iTunes.
make sure you install all the latest updates from apple

DVD burning problem
Sounds like you are right. DVD burners are not too expensive these days. You might save yourself a lot of headache if you just replace it.
Sony DW-Q30A Problem
the dvd writer needs to be replaced,the laser is faulty or miisaligned, the cost of a repair is no longer viable because a new one would cost about $60 (£32.00)
DVD Writer
It sounds as if the drive needs cleaning and re aligning with a lens cleaner or replacing, but try one thing before doing anything.
Go to my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and look down the list for your cd/dvd drives and click the '+' sign then highlight your dvd drive and right click to delete.
Restart the pc and windows will find the drive again automatically and install the drivers.
DVD Writer
You can firstly try this:-

But it may well be that your laser will need re aligning and cleaning with a cd cleaner, but if still no change the laser is on it's way out, I am lead to believe some burners have dual lasers for dvd and cd
