What is happening is that the magnetron is shorted, causing the high voltage transformer to overheat. That is what you are smelling is the insulation getting hot. When the magnetron shorts out, it makes a loud buzzing sound. Replacement magnetrons costs almost as much as a new oven so it rarely makes sense to fix.

Weird that it worked when you left then not. Have you had the lights inside of your house dimming off and on?? It could mean a bad neutral connection to your house from the power pole. That can cause the low voltage transformer on the timer board to burn out. So the fuse in the unit will not even blow but still kill the Low Voltage transformer. If sounds possible call your power company to do a "load test" on the incoming power lines to your house.. They don't typically even charge to do that. They take out your meter and put a tester in that spot that tests the supply to your house.
...have Danby 1.0 cu. ft.
When talking about "Power Level", there is a misconception that the cooking power is being adjusted. This is not the case. The user is actually adjusting the duty cycle of the Magnetron. For instance at 30%, the Magnetron will be turned on for 20 sec. and off for 40 sec. A loud 60 cycle hum is usually caused by a shorted Magnetron. Thus the unit is not economically repairable.
