Though not familiar with this model, VCRs of all sorts have an idler mechanism which drives the supply and takeup spindles. Either the idler is somehow defective and slipping, and, assuming this idler is belt driven, the belt may be slipping just enough to cause a no Rew/FFW condition. If you had access to a test tape jig (a clear dummy tape, which allows a tech to view what is happening in the area normally obscured by the loaded tape), this might give a clue as to what is happening. On alot of machines, a problem with Rew/FFW would also mean a tape takeup problem in standard play, result in tape spilling out inside the machine. Sensors would catch this condition and go into a error mode, as yours is doing. One other thing which might be happening here, is the pinch roller not being disengaged from the capstan in the Rew/FFW modes. I think this is where I'd look first, and you can probably see if such is happening just by pulling the cover off the VCR. The pinch roller is just to the right of the rotating video head. In the play and forward/rev search modes it will press the tape up against the capstan (a rotating shaft). When in Rew/FFW, the pinch roller should be pulled back from the capstan, maybe 1/4 inch or so. Whatever the case, repair will likely take someone tech savvy. Costs might not be economically justified, with the low-cost, disposable rigs sold in the last 10+ years.

Well it might be 2 things like maybe the tape is broken like the white circle parts on the bottom of the castette tapes are loose or broken or the machine for the part that allows the tapes to sit in there might be broken or have something inside of the vcr like a coin or another forein odject like that then.

The simplest explanation is that you are using a video tape that has it's protect tab removed. Covering the slot with tape will solve that. However if the tab is there, it might be that the switch inside it pushes on is bent or broken.

Sounds like a bad solder joint somewhere. Perhaps in power supply?

I realized that I probably needed the remote control to accomplish the task (which we have lost) so I just borrowed a neighbor's VCR.

what is it physically wired to?

I assume that you are coming in on channel 73 because you don't have a line level input on the display (tv) you are using. If that is the case, your options are limited. If you DO have a line input to the monitor, run the VCR to that input and just switch to that input when you want to use the VCR. If you have RF in only, -that would be the screw on type connector- you would have to have the same kind of output on the VCR. Understand, the VCR will be outputting to channel 3 or 4, so you would need a 2x rf switch, and you would have to change from channel 73 to 3 or 4 whenever you wanted to watch a movie. There may be other options, but I don't really know what you have.

1. Set tv to channel 4
2. insert a pre-recorded tape into vcr.
3.press play once to start playback.
4. after a few seconds press play on the vcr for 3 sec you will see a playback picture.
when a picture doesn't appear on the tv screen repeat step 4.
5. press stop to stop playback.

A schematic would definitely be a plus here, as you could then check the logic levels from the sensor(s), as the "light path" is interupted. If voltage levels changed properly, and no tape load was initiated, then this would indicate a problem elsewhere. You may want to also check for the presence of power supply voltages. If the voltage supply for the loading motor (often the capstan motor) is missing then there would be no load initiate. It sounds like you have some knowledge of how these things work- a good thing. As you are probably aware, todays electronic equipment (VCRs included) is substandard, disposable, not worth investing much if any repair. Find an old Panasonic manufactured unit, and such will often outlive several of these "lighter than air" cheap rascals.

The most likely culprits here are belts. This unit has belts and a rubber idler. Replace all of the rubber parts and you should be OK. This is a normal maintenance procedure for VCRs.

Go into setup thru the "Menu" or similar button on the remote and you should see the "Language" option.

I suggest you get the Tape path cleaned up. Could be dirty video heads or a dirty Control Head. Use a good 'wet' type cleaning cassette.

Just the usual problem of needing the rubber belts replaced.
The VCR's has a sensor that monitors if the take up reel is turning. If it doesn't turn for a few seconds then it shuts down. The most common problem is the idler tire (or clutch) starts slipping too much abd the take up reel doesn't have the strength to pull the tape back into the cassette.
Buy a kit of belts for your model from all kinds of sites on the net and install them yourself if you are handy with delicate mechanisms.

you may have to contact the manufacturer for a "Factory Reset" I cannot find any information about this online. call the tech support number in the manual

You will need to take the original remoter and go into the menu, find the channel set up and reprogram the VCR for the channels, as when you lost power the channels also went out because of the memory chips need the power to hold the data.
