Will not turn on.
if the power indicator light is not blinking, there is a problem in the main power supply.if it is blinking 2 times there is a short (SOMEWHERE)somewhere takes in a lot of territory, and the FBT would be included in that. If it is the flyback, it WAS over $100, but is no longer available from SONY

Turns off by itself
Looks like SMPS problem. Check the power supply circuits for any leakage or short. SMPS will shut down for any fault condition in the circuit. After checking finally check opto isolator in SMPS and replace with new ones.
DO NOT SWITCH ON TV if OPTO I C is removed. SMPS will go out of control and the power supply capacitors will explode due to raise in voltage!

It is possible that the button your son stepped on is stuck. If so, remove the batteries form the DVR remote control and see if the TV works. Unplug the TV from the wall for a few minutes to clear its memory to be sure. Some times remote controllers can have cross-talk, meaning it can affect other equipment,

Tuning digital channels
This is answered on the sony support pages see
http://www.sony.co.uk/section/contactand then enter 're-tune digital channels' in the 'search by keyword' box for the explanation.
It basically needs a software upgrade which will be downloaded free if you've still got a freeview channel - but if you've lost them all you'll need help - anyway it's all explained by sony.

Poor sound quality
This is just a guess but the dolby sound on my system is bad however when I switch to regular "stereo" sound it improves. See if your audio set up has a choice of sound and try them all.
