Will not turn on.

if the power indicator light is not blinking, there is a problem in the main power supply.if it is blinking 2 times there is a short (SOMEWHERE)somewhere takes in a lot of territory, and the FBT would be included in that. If it is the flyback, it WAS over $100, but is no longer available from SONY

Turns off by itself

Looks like SMPS problem. Check the power supply circuits for any leakage or short. SMPS will shut down for any fault condition in the circuit. After checking finally check opto isolator in SMPS and replace with new ones.

DO NOT SWITCH ON TV if OPTO I C is removed. SMPS will go out of control and the power supply capacitors will explode due to raise in voltage!

It is possible that the button your son stepped on is stuck. If so, remove the batteries form the DVR remote control and see if the TV works. Tuning digital channels

and then enter 're-tune digital channels' in the 'search by keyword' box for the explanation.
It basically needs a software upgrade which will be downloaded free if you've still got a freeview channel - but if you've lost them all you'll need help - anyway it's all explained by sony.

WILL NOT RETUNE CANNOT FIND INSTRUCTION BOOK

The retuning process is as follows:

  1. Press the [i+] button on the remote control to display the DIGITAL INFO menu.
  2. Press the BLUE button to display the MAIN MENU.
  3. Press the UP or DOWN buttons to highlight AUTO TUNING then press the OK button to display the AUTO TUNING MENU.
  4. Press the RED button to start the auto tuning process for all available digital channels.
  5. Wait for the process to complete.

If toy wish to CANCEL the auto tuning process whilst it is processing then press the BLUE button at any time.

Stuttering Start Up....

This tv do loose connections on power supply or horizontal area. Some time bad capacitors in power supply. Maybe just need be resolder connections. Or try to find electronic cooler spray in use on power supply area , you will see changes on you original problem.

Poor sound quality

This is just a guess but the dolby sound on my system is bad however when I switch to regular "stereo" sound it improves. See if your audio set up has a choice of sound and try them all.
