Dell W4201C 42 in. Plasma HDTV - Page 4 Questions & Answers
I have a Dell 42"
The image is generated this way: the image processor renders the image , the ysus board converts that rendered image in actual pixel data and the buffer boards transform the data in actual commands for the pixels. This is what happens when they fail:
- the image board - the entire image goes missing or is severely corrupted.
- the ysus board - half of the image goes or gets corrupted
- the buffer board - since it never happens that all the buffer chips on a board die at the same time only the lines commanded by the faulty chip get corrupted. This is exactly your case.

1. Check for bad capacitors and transistors both through mount and
surface mounted in the vertical section of your TV.
2. If no problems are found focus your attention on the tuner check
for broken connections wiggle your coax connection to see if the
problem clears also check for open inductor coils.
3 Check the vertical and horizontal output chip if they read shorted

Hello I was wondering I have horizontal lines
This could be the screen itself, the main driver, and or the matrix decoder. You are best to take the set in for authorized service. They should have test boards and diagnostics to find out what exactly has failed.
Buying boards yourself to try could end up being very costly for no reason. Even if you guessed right, there may be the need to do some calibration procedures that you would not be able to do at home.
If the screen itself has failed, the cost would exceed the replacement cost of the set. The matrix board could be rather expensive if it must be replaced.
If you are lucky, it may be a simple cold solder connection or maybe a connector is not properly seated.

DELL PLASMA
Most cases the Y-SUS, Y upper buffer, and Y lower buffer is the problem. The replace the 3 boards are located on the left side of the chassis when you open up the TV. 90% of the time this will solve the problem.
Look for burn marks on the upper and lower buffer boards (mostly around the chips with the heatsinks on them).

I probably do, although , I must warn you, there are several possible and different causes of that description.
But the most popular one, hands down, is a bad Y sustain board , which also usually comes with bad sustain buffer boards.

I will be posting a new and more detailed blog entry one of the coming days...but this one should work..it's a bit beyond the starting point, but should still do nonetheless.
If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us. We do repair the Y sustain boards and we've fixed a number of buffer boards before arriving to the conclusion that it is indeed best to replace the buffers with new ones. The bad news is they are expensive!

My dell plasma went black,
Burnt smell = something failed the big way and melted. It's most likely in the y-sus board. To find out which board has been damaged beyond repair you must open the tv and look at them. Once you identify it take it out, read the part code that is printed on it and buy a replacement one - either directly from Dell or from one of the sites that deal in separate components.
My 42" plasma tv screen went black but there is still audo
The most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.
I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.
How to reset the parental control code
This is what I found in the instruction manual on this and I posted it here for you. Try using 3355 for the code and everything else listed here. If that doesn't work, try the very last tip which tells you how to do a factory reset and repeat the first step using the 3355 as the code.
Here's the instructions from manual:
Parental Control
Parental Control allows you to block certain channels or programs so children cannot view
programs that are not age appropriate.
To enter the Parental Control menu, you need an
access code. The first time you enter, use access
code 3355. See "Setting an Access Code" on
page 33 for information on creating a new access
code.
You can set the following options to block
content:
• Channel Lock — Blocks selected channels
• Movie Rating — Blocks movies based on their rating (G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, and X)
• TV Ratings — Blocks TV shows based on their rating
• Block Options — Turns on or off all your parental control settings
NOTE: You can use Clear All to unblock the channels and programs that you have set.
NOTE: If the Block Control in the Parental Control menu is enabled, all the sub screens in POP (POP1,
POP3 and POP12) mode will be blank
Setting an Access Code m
After you enter the Parental Control menu for the first time, you can set your own four-digit access
code. If for any reason you lose or forget your access code, you can use the default code.
1 In the Parental Control menu, select Change Code.
2 Using the number pad on the remote control, enter a new access code.
3 Select Exit.
Reset the original factory defaults. Press Menu on the remote
control, select Setup, and then select Factory Reset

Hello. It looks like I have the same problem that you had with your Dell W4200HD.
Where did you find the new power supply for yours?
Also, did you determine that you didn't really need a new power supply and that it was just a connection problem? If yes, could you please give me some help with what you did to get yours working.
Also, do you still have the power supply you took out of your TV? If yes, would you be willing to sell it to me?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Hi
Thanks for using FixYa. Yes the TV can be repaired if you get the
parts easily. From what you have described it seems to be the issue with Y-main
however, Y-buffer and the logic board should also be checked. These boards are
located on the right side of the unit and as I said the parts are not easily
available however, you can check this link for parts. Please do accept the
solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.
Thanks

When i turn my tv
Hi
Thanks
for using FixYa. You’ll need to check the X and Y sustain buffer boards. When
either of these boards goes bad then the common problems include negative
image, no image, vertical or horizontal stripes on picture, turns on and than
turns off, and many more. You’ll need to open the back off the TV and check for
any swollen/bulged capacitors on these boards and replace whichever has gone
bad. If still the issue is not resolved, then please check the power supply
board. All this is only recommended if you have electrical expertise & know
how to solder/re-solder components as these units contain high voltages even
when in off position. Please
do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further
assistance.
Thanks

4 inch horizontal black bar across my 42 inch dell
The thick bar you are seeing could be a couple of things - either your HDMI or any other wire your connecting has been run too close to electrical lines, or your cable incoming needs to be grounded and/or filtered. It could also be a defect in the TV.
Sometimes it will just go away.... Its hard to tell without actually looking at your setup and television.
