Sylvania 6842-PEM 42 in. EDTV-Ready Plasma Television - Page 3 Questions & Answers
Doesn't stay on
You probably just need a new main power board. You can buy them from Vance Baldwin, Probably $125 to $150 with S&H. Adjusments are needed with a digital voltmeter while the board is operating in the set. Some techs have told me that the capacitor failure sometimes damaged one of the switching regulator ICs and that those parts were not available. Before we worked out that a special type of capacitor was needed, the capacitors we installed were getting very hot and we knew that they were not going to last long.

Standby mode
A shipment of new boards is now available. You can purchase one from the distributor Vance Baldwin.
if the capacitor didnt fix it, it must have more problems, and those other parts were not available.

No Audio
Check the menus to make sure the audio is not turned off. If that is OK and you have the means, try using other inputs. If it works on some inputs and not on others, that would imply a system control problem, which is unusual for that model.

Sylvania 6842pem
yes, you can get a 50 watt capacitor from Radio Shack and put it in yourself. It cost me $ 1.45 for a package of 2. Just ask them for a 50 watt capacitor
Just be careful when you remove the board, it holds a charge for a little while. I know from experience 8-)
Just take a small soldering pencil and remove the old one, then add the new one. You can get everything you need from Radio Shack for under $20 bucks. (if you have nothing to work with (solder, iron, capacitors Etc)
One hint, be careful with removing and adding the new one, don't burn or scrap the board and make sure when you add the new one not to put to much solder on the connections. Before you put the board back in, verify that you did not leave any solder on the board or cross the connections with the solder.
Believe me, this unit is very easy to work on and you should not have any issues.
Good luck. Hope this works for you.
Let me know if you need any additional information.

Wont turn on
Most common problem is a ruptured capacitor on the main power pcb. It can be seen as ruptured if you know where to look. It has to be replaced with a special type of capacitor or it will quickly fail again. If its less than a year old it is still on parts warranty.

Sylvania 6842-PEM Flickering Problem
Something is breaking down. Possibly a specific ceramic capacitor on the main power pcb that has been troublesome. Usually there is just a loud pop and the screen goes dead. If the set is less than a year old it is still on parts warranty and the technician could just change circuit boards until the problem is gone.

Both TV'S Blanked out, i've only had them for a year
Most likely a ruptured ceramic capacitor on the main power pcb. The capacitor must be replaced with a different, special, type or it will fail again. We have repaired a lot of them with this problem. If it is less than a year old it is still on parts warranty.

I have an old Sylvania tv and it won't turn on
Here are some troubleshooting tips to try. However, as it is an older set, if these tips fail, the cost of a repair at a shop might exceed the value of the TV. In short, a new TV may be in the works. Cross your fingers. One of these tips may work.
Let's troubleshoot the issue and try to get it working:
If you are using a remote, check the batteries in it. If you are using several remotes with it, try the alternative remote. Sometimes there is a glitch affecting the remote for a Roku where it won't turn on the TV other than a powered black screen and you have to use the other remote to turn it off and back on and then the Roku screen pops up. I have not sorted out why.
Check Power Cord and Connections:
First, ensure that the power cord is securely plugged into both the TV and the electrical outlet.
If you suspect a faulty power cord, consider trying a different one.
Reset the TV:
While most Sylvania TVs don't have a dedicated reset button, you can perform a manual reset:
Unplug the TV's AC adapter from the electrical socket.
Press and hold the Power button on the TV for 20 seconds.
Plug the AC adapter back in and turn on the TV.
Check Audio/Video Cables:
Inspect the audio/video cables connecting your TV to the satellite or cable receiver.
Ensure that the color-coded prongs match their respective connecting points.
Correct any mismatches (e.g., white cable into a red port) by reorganizing the prongs.
Inspect Coaxial Cable:
Look for the coaxial cable on the rear side of the receiver, attached to the port labeled as ANT IN.
Confirm that the connection is firm; a loose coaxial connection can cause display issues.
Tighten the cable by pinching the silver band on the end and rotating it clockwise until secure.
Check for Interference:
If distortion continues on the TV screen, consider nearby interference.
Power-hungry appliances can cause electronic interference, affecting display quality.
Visit a Repair Shop:
If the above steps don't resolve the issue, you may need professional help.
Some technical faults, such as a blown fuse or faulty capacitor, require expertise in dismantling and soldering.
If uncomfortable with such tasks, consider visiting a repair shop

- Press the "TV" button on the remote to set it to control the TV.
- Press the "Power" button repeatedly until the TV turns off.

- Press and hold the "Code Search" button on the remote until the indicator light stays on.
- Enter the code using the number buttons on the remote.

- Try Common Codes:
- Some common Sylvania TV remote codes for Philips remotes are 0810, 1684, 1886, 2183, 1081, 1172, 1196, and 2049. Try entering these codes manually.
