There are no specific brands, however Verbatim are widely considered the best. Your, problem, however, is unlikely the brand of the media and more likely the recording speed of the media. Most blank DVD's on the market are 16x or faster and your machine (c. 2005) doesn't support anything faster than 4x. When I was reading the manual it referred to the "state of the art" 8x discs that the machine didn't have the ability to support. The discs you need are available and often are labeled as 2x - 4x meaning that they will support any drives that burn at a 2x - 4x spin rate. Also, be sure that you are not purchasing DVD+R and DVD+RW as they are not compatible with your unit.

There are no firmware updates available with this unit. It sounds like there is a defect in the unit itself. I would use the unit for playback only and not recording and invest in a unit from a manufacturer that offers better support. A new one will run about 150-200$.

Go to the Sylvania/Emerson web site and you can download the entire manual for free. If you hooked it up and it doesn't work right, make sure you have the TV on the correct channel. Either ch 3 or 4. the other problem might be you hooked it up with component or composite cables and are not setting your TV on AV. Audio/Video channel.

a bad time getting dvd's that will work in my machine. I also
bought mine from Sears. I have found one that works every
time and that is a MAXWELL DVD-RW. The trick I think is
the speed of the DVD, so you need to use the ones that have
Up to Max 2X, 4.7 GBgo, 2 Hrs. I find these work every time.
