The following troubleshooting guidelines are basic troubleshooting steps. Battery Charging It is recommended to charge the battery while the system is off for faster charge times. Users may notice longer charge times when the system is powered on and running graphics extensive applications.
No POST If the system does not perform a Power On Self Test, there are various things to look for:
  1. Check to ensure that the system has a power light.
  2. If the system has no power light, ensure that it is plugged into AC power. Remove the battery.
  3. If the system has power but is not performing a POST, check to see if the keyboard status lights flash to indicate a successful POST, but no video, or that the keyboard status lights are lit in a sequence indicating a system problem.
bios_leds-1.jpg
  1. With the power off and the system unplugged, remove all CRUs from the system and reconnect that AC adapter to the system and try again.
  2. Run the On Board Diagnostics (OBD).
Video If the LCD on the system shows no display, or has other LCD problems, there are some basic steps to take:
  1. If the LCD is not displaying video or the video is garbled, run the BIST Test.
  2. If the LCD is not displaying any video, connect an external monitor to eliminate a no POST problem. A good image on the external monitor eliminates a video card problem or a POST problem.
  3. Connect an external monitor when possible for all LCD related problems, to help eliminate a software possibility or video card problem.
  4. If the LCD has extremely dim video, attempt to adjust the brightness or connect an AC adapter to eliminate a power management conservation setting set in the BIOS.
  5. If the LCD has lines on the screen, check the system during POST as well as system setup to verify if the lines are present in all modes of operation. Run the BIST Utility.
  6. If the LCD has color problems, run the BIST Utility.
  7. Run the On Board Diagnostics (OBD).

I can not typeanything

Try reseating the keyboard connection:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins6400/en/sm/keyboard.htm#wp1111863
if that doesn't resolve, then see if an external keyboard will get you access to the system, then reset bios defaults
If still no go, replace the keyboard, if that fails the motherboard

Dell Inspiron 6400 will not

Just to understand your problem your laptop is working properly when plugged directly to the power cord but not when running only on battery? Then it sounds like you need to replace the battery.
thank you,

Hi it seems that your Operating System is corrupted, I can give you a link of step by step ways on how to recover it because for sure you got tons of important stuff saved in your computer but you would need you Operating System CD to do this step, but theres still a way for you to find out if "Repair your computer" is present in " Windows Advance Option, how? Just restart your computer and during its booting process , keep tapping on F8 until you will see the "Windows Advance Option" where you can find " Repair you computer" (Note: Sometimes its not there as your option, if that happens you will have no choice but to use your Operating Disc) then you would need this link as your guide... http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/fixing-bootmgr-is-missing-error-while-trying-to-boot-windows-vista/ I hope this will help. Problem wid bluetooth

Right Click on 'MyComputer' and click on Properties.Click on 'Hardware' and then Click on 'Device Manager'.

Check if the Bluetooth Card is detected in this list or not...
If its not there, then the Bluetooth card is not there in the system, You'll have to connect an external bluetooth Usb adapter...

If you are still confused, give me the Service tag/Express Sevice Code located on a sticker at the bottom of the system.
My friend works for DELL, I'll find it out for you..
Thanks and Best of Luck !

Hi.

Error Code 0148 means that the Dell diagnostics has found a problem with the hard drive. It is failing or has already failed.
This means you have to get a new hard drive for the laptop. Once you have a new hard drive and have installed it you can use the recovery disk that you should have got with the laptop to reinstall the operating system.

Regards.

My dell lcd screen some

We might be having issues with the video card or the LCD
For us to isolate where the problem is coming from
1. Tried accessing the BIOS see if the vertical lines are present
2. If there are vertical lines on BIOS definitely the problem is LCD and we to replace it
3. So if we see vertical lines inside Windows we might have issues with Video Card itself or Video Card driver
4. Try uninstalling the video driver and install a fresh copy of video driver. Else we need to replace the video card
5. Usually laptops have integrated video. So we need to replace Motherboard

An error 2000-146 means an IDE device failure. You can still try run a full format or even a low-level format to make the hard drive usable, but this would only extend the life of the drive for a little while. I have seen enough 146 hard drive errors in my 3 years at Dell to know that you can't trust this drive anymore to hold your data. The good thing is, hard drives are getting cheaper by the gigabyte. Check online for good prices on hard drives. Hope this helps.
