take it in to a local repair place for HP and most will do a free or cheap diagnosis so you don't end up buying wrong parts and waste more money. Check with HP for an authorized service center near you and call around. In this economy, some places may do a free disgnosis or at least apply the diagnostic fee towards a repair.

Your power jack may have become unsoldered from the main board after four years of plugging in and unplugging the AC adapter (and thus wiggling the jack). If the AC adapter seems to wobble a lot at the jack, this is most likely the problem. Online places advertise about $100 to fix it. If you could get a service manual, and are handy with a soldering iron (low power), you could do it yourself. You have to take the main board completely out. And if you DO fix it, lay a bead of epoxy around the sides and back of the jack, and let it set, so it doesn't happen again. Bounce these options against the price of another notebook.

u have to boot xp on it with your cds set bios to cd 1st then put xp cd in it ask hit any key to boot in ten formattt new hard drive make partions ect then install xp ok

Causes for this problem can be any of the following:
1- CPU gets overheated. solution: clean dust from fan and heatsink assembly and donot forget to replace the heatsink compound, this is very important.
2- Memory problems. solution: use a program called MEMTEST86+ from the site http://www.memtest.org/ . It is a free and great program.
3-Power problem. By time the capacitors of the power supply gets dried. Causing them to not be able to fulfill power demands. solution: try working with power supply without battery. As the power supply has to run computer and charge battery. We reduce the load. If everything is fine. repair power supply by replacing deffective capacitor.
4-Battery problem. Try operation without battery.
5-Dried solders on motherboard or a component problem on the motherboard. Solution: no solution except replacing motherboard.
