I have an older dishwasher also and recently my wife also complained about it not cleaning right... so me being the man I am tried in vain to clean the things... Bought new spray arms online and installed them in minutes...now the thing works like new... However I have also found that if the heating element goes bad then that also can mess things up bad... Check for a tripped circuit breaker, inspect the wiring that connects to the dishwasher for breaks. Is the door latch locking? If the door is out of alignment the door switch may not completely engage. To test this, with the door open, close the latch and select a cycle and depress the switch(water may spray-and make sure nothing is setting inside the dishwasher)The switch is probably a little hole with plastic or metal inside. Using the eraser end of a wooden pencil, push inside the hole to press the switch in completely.
You may be able to realign the latch by loosening the screws and moving the striker plate. You may have to remove the control panel to access the screws.

the pump is stuck. remove motor.insert plastic pen into bottom of motor.remove impeller by turning counter clockwise.file bottom of impeller stem.put enough washers on the keeper clip to prevent the impeller and the pump housing from binding.reassemble and there you have it!!!!

Welcome to FixYa,

Based on your description I`d suspect a plugged wash pump.

The place to start for that is to pull the pump filter, spray arm and check for food deposit, broken glass, undesolved detergent and general water deposit built up in the sump well.

The key is to get in there and clean it all out, I`ve attached a link at the bottom that will show you how to go about it. It is not really referring to the heating issue, or maybe even your model, ( Most Whirlpool, Inglis, Kenmore, Kitchen-Aid, Jenn-Air ) but it is the same procedure.

When you`re finished run it through a test cycle and see how it goes.

Hi

White film deposits are observed if water is hard or when you are using more detergent than needed, try filling detergent cup half way. Try using white vinegar after the wash cycle is complete, run a complete cycle. Also turn down the heat on the hot water fed to the dishwasher. Try using water softener for better results.
You can also add vinegar in the final rinse cycle.

Dishwasher not pumping issue usually occurs due to kinked drain pipe, clogged drain filter or drain pump. Check the drain hose for any visible clogging, remove if present. If no visible lint is present then remove then turn off the dishwasher and remove the drain hose and check for any visible clogging. If still not visible then the drain filter or drain pump is clogged and you’ll need to clean the drain filter and drain pump.

Please note that dishwashers don’t pump out the complete water such that heating element doesn’t overheat.

If the resistance occurs over a range of motion of the door, look for rubbing on the hinges (I have one out of the box that needed the plate straightened.) If the resistance occurs only at latching, I'm still having the same issue (with no rubbing on counters, latch alignment, etc); so I'll try to find and inspect the stike plate (rumored to be on the dishwasher tub near the bottom).

you might also want to try a fabulous new cleaning product called affresh you can find this product at your local home depot takes out all stagnant smells and actually makes your dishwasher perform better if you think there is food caught around the screen area or inside the chopper call a technian
