The dryer does get hot but takes a very long time

It sound like you have a venting problem. The air from the dryer is probably restricted by either a clogged exhaust hose or duct work in house or a stuck vent flap where air blows to the outside. If your vent goes straight up to the roof, something may be blocking the exit or the whole line may be clogged. Also check for a kinked flex hose that attaches to the dryer. If blockage is in wall of house, there are vent cleaning companies that can clean out the line.

Dryer will not turn on

If you are having dryer problems and you cannot even get the thing to start, then you might want to start going through this check list of possibilities. There are a number of things that can cause your dryer to not run.

A couple of the most common problems are the thermal fuse has blown or the door switch is not operating properly. On many dryers if the thermal fuse blows, the dryer will not run at all. This fuse can be checked with an ohm meter. It should show continuity if it is okay. If there is no continuity then you need to replace it and also find out what else failed. This is a safety device that usually blows because something else allowed the dryer to get too hot. It is usually located in the back of the dryer, on the blower housing. Some are oval in shape and others are rectangular, usually with two wires attached.

A defective door switch or a bent door switch lever can also cause you to have problems. If the lever is broken or bent it will not activate the switch. If the switch is broken, this also will not allow the dryer to be started.

The push (or turn) to start switch can go bad, but is unlikely. To check this, hold it in or turn it and then check to make sure you have continuity with an ohm meter.

If the dryer starts and then stops when the switch is released check the control board or the ?even heat? control on some model dryers. Some dryers have a belt break switch that can fail or your belt may be way loose or broken.

Check for burn marks or burnt wires at the terminal block on your dryer, poor connections can cause all kinds of problems. Also poor connections can cause fires.

A bad power cord also falls into this same category.

Of course, always check that you have the proper voltage to the outlet that you are plugging into.

How to take apart a dryer?

First of all, UNPLUG the dryer if you plan on servicing the inside. There are still dangerous voltages present with the dryer turned off.

Lift the front of the dryer slightly in order to place a block of wood under the front feet (I recommend a couple of small pieces of 2 x 4). This will give you access to the screws without having to hold the machine up at the same time. There should be a couple of torx style screws under the bottom seam of the panel. Remove these screws and the panel should drop down and come off. Sometimes these panels can stick. If this occurs, tap on the side slightly and it shoudl come free. I hope this helps you. If you have any further questions, please post back with your comments.

Kenmore 80 series electric dryer.

it sounds like the thermal fuse is bad...The back cover needs to come off, but first UNPLUG
If you have a multi-meter set to ohms and test the little bullet shaped fuse in lower area on rear back. It sets alittle left above and up from rear vent it should have two wires going to a small bullit shaped fuse being held on with one screw.. check with meter and if bad you can touch wires together and this will start dryer..it stops dryer if it senses lack of air flow..they usually go bad if your vent is somewhat blocked , or totally blocked...usually before this happens..you might have to put your clothes in twice to dry them.. The wires can be insulated together so they do not touch metal..this will allow machine to run, but , you want to figure out why and correct this problem as welll ....sometimes, they just go bad.

Button has pushed in dropping

This model usually has two screws hidden under corner trim sections that snap on each end. The best thing to do is grab the top part of the endcap and pull back towards yourself. this will make it come loose and then remove it. Under these endcaps will be two screws...one in each corner , remove these and pull towards you and up the whole console should come up......now, sometimes, there are four screws holding a back cover on...if so, just remove these and you can see everthing there. the start switch just is held in place by a plastic tab thats attached to the switch. The switch has a square shape which you line up into frame and turn switch like 1/4 turn until the locking tab snaps into place...its possible that the switch fell apart and if it did...you will need to replace switch
