If there is no separate power supply the usb plug must be used in order to provide power for the speakers, but whether the analogue cable must be plugged in or not will depend on the internal construction and specification of the speakers. Forget the upgrade to windows 10, Dell doesn't recommend you do this as it disables some programs. I have the same computer.
