"wrong region" on dvd player

According to the Wikipedia, "DVD region codes are a DRM technique designed to allow motion picture studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and price, according to the region. DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played.

The DVD Copy Control Association in California, USA, requires that DVD player manufacturers incorporate the Regional Playback Control (RPC) system - according to the Australian government's anti-monopoly watchdog, the ACCC. It is therefore this US Association that is responsible for the RPC system that effectively divides the world into six regions for the purposes of controlling and manipulating distribution within the global DVD market.

There are six different official regions and two informal variations. DVD discs may use one code, a combination of codes (Multi-Region), most codes (Region 0) or every code/no codes (Region All). The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs encoded for a different region; however, region-free DVD players are also commercially available. In addition, many DVD players can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DVD_region_code

A brand new DVD player allows you to play DVDs from different regions only five times, locking to the last region watched after these five times. So, you might have used your five region-change permissions and your DVD player is now locked to a different one from that of the DVD you want to watch (even thou you might have watched normally before).

There are some softwares like "DVD Region+CSS Free" from dvdidle.com or "CloneDVD 2" from Slysoft.com that allow you to back up your DVDs without the annoying region code. There are also sites like www.rpc1.org and www.dvdexploder.com that provide firmware or remote control codes to unlock the region of your DVD player.

Hope this information helps you understand why your DVD player is behaving like that and how to bypass that pitfall.

Philips TV 55PFL7007 double blink two times then pause suddenly after 7 good years. No effect of keeping power off for 1+ minute.

When you performed the power cycle did you make sure all accessories were disconnected? Also plug the TV directly into a wall mains socket, not through an extension lead or socket! Repeat this test at least 3 times or until the TV powers up.

Connect Philips sw3440/37 powered sub, with no other components. I bought this powered sub at goodwill... How do I hook it up without the other components (dvd player etc.)

Unfortunately, I don't think you can connect this sub-woofer without the rest of the components of the HTS3440/37 DVD Home Theater System or a related Philips home theater system. The speakers in the system are hard-wired with a colored plug that you connect to the sub-woofer. Then you need connect the inter-connect cable between the sub-woofer to the DVD Player of the system. See the wiring guide in the Quick Start Manual or the User Guide available on the product support page: https://www.usa.philips.com/c-p/HTS3440_37/divx-ultra/support . Sub-woofers that aren't part of a home theater system connect to a receiver with a digital audio RCA cable. One example is here: https://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-ULTRA-Subwoofer-Cable-Feet/dp/B003FVYXY0 . Then the speakers also connect to the receiver. Even if you find another Philips Home Theater system that is missing the sub-woofer, I wouldn't rule out a change in the pin arrangement for the inter-connect cable that would cause the system to fail. I can't find any sources for a replacement inter-connect cable; the part number isn't in the manual that I can find. I wish that I had better news for you. Cindy Wells
