Try a known good power cord and wall outlet and see if the printer would power on.If there were any power outages before the printer stopped working, most likely it got damaged by an electrical surge. If the printer powers on after replacing the power cable, check the operator panel display for any error message. Check page 89 of the printer manual for an explanation. The manual can downloaded from the link below:

See the manufacturer's web-site:

for this manufactured-in-2005 printer. The web-site has _NO_ device-drivers for Apple.
So, are you sure that the device-drivers are _NOT_ already "built-in" to the Apple Operating System?

I need to scan a

1 Turn on your computer and printer, and make sure they are connected.
2 Load your original document.
3 Click Start >> All Programs >> Dell Printers >> Dell Photo AIO Printer 964 >> Dell All-In-One Center.
4 Click Preview

You should now see a preview of your scanned document.

Adjust the dotted lines if they are not completely around your document.
There is a 'Send scanned image to:' option -

You can save the document to your desktop.

Now go into your mail program and when in the body of the email, use your programs features to attach the scanned file document to your email (you did not specify the email program you use, so this is just a general mention of attaching the file to your email).

Black replacement ink in for

Check that the Gold Contacts on the front of the cartridge is clean, also the metal contacts in the printer that read the cartridge may have been jammed out of place. Use a bright torch, pull out the black and look in the spot were the cartridge goes, you will see the contacts i am referring to. they are very flimsy and can be moved very easy!!
We have come across quite a few with this problem, most of the time it is the actual printer itself though, and replacing the printer is the best resolution.

I have a Dell 964

I would try a few of these steps...

First, make sure there is no tape on the print cartridge blocking the color nozzles. In many cases a manufacturer will put tape over the print heads when the package the item. Make sure any tape and residual adhesive is removed.

Second, try re-seating the cartridge. Make sure the cartridge is in the right bay (For example, if they are the same size, make sure you put the color cartridge in the bay designated for color, and black cartridge is in the one designated for black.
Also, make sure the cartridges are fitting snugly and in the right direction.

Third, if this happens with more than one cartridge, the problem could be with your printer, there are metal contacts on the printer bay and the cartridge that need to be connected. you may want to try cleaning the contacts (you might be able to use a small bit of alcohol, but not too much, like a little on a q-tip) and also clean the contacts on the print cartridge, and maybe even the nozzles on the cartridge.

You MAY Have also gotten a bad cartridge from Dell, if none of this works, including your clean head attempts, you may want to get a new cartridge ...maybe by yelling at Dell to send you one for free.

If a new cartridge is not the case, it may unfortunately be a problem with the printer itself.

Good Luck

Refilled ink catridges and printer

If you unplug the printer from the wall and remove the power brick for 60 seconds, this will reset any error messages the printer has. I would then plug everything back in.

Power on the printer.

Open the printer(with the power on) and take out the Dell Series 5 black cartridge and then reseat it. I would then take out the color Dell Series 5 ink cartridge and reseat it. Now close the printer and it will print an alignment page.

Any error messages?

black cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)

photo cartridge = black side(left side) color cartridge = color side(right side)

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

It's possible to get a Dell Series 5 ink cartridge with a bad sensor. I would that these back to the place of purchase for a replacement or a refund.

What typeof ink cartridge?

Ink cartridges are different on different model printers. The printer cartridge has a model or type number printed on its label. Use the cartridge that is made for your printer.

Dell 944 instruction to install new ink cartridge

Replacing Ink Cartridges

CAUTION: Before performing any of the procedures listed in this section, read and

follow the safety information in "CAUTION: SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS" on page 9.

Dell ink cartridges are only available through Dell. You can order more ink online at

www.dell.com/supplies or by phone. To order by phone, see "Ordering Supplies" on page 2.

Dell recommends Dell ink cartridges for your printer. Dell does not provide warranty coverage

for problems caused by using accessories, parts, or components not supplied by Dell.

1 Turn on your printer.

2 Lift the printer unit, and position the scanner support between the tabs to hold it open.

The ink cartridge carrier moves and stops at the loading position unless the printer is busy.

3 Press down on the ink cartridge lever to raise each ink cartridge lid.

4 Remove the old ink cartridges.

5 Store the cartridges in an air-tight container, such as the storage unit you received with

your photo cartridge, or dispose of them properly.

6 If you are installing new ink cartridges, remove the sticker and transparent tape from the

back and bottom of each ink cartridge.

7 Insert the new ink cartridges. Make sure the black or photo ink cartridge is secure in the

left ink cartridge carrier, and the color ink cartridge is secure in the right ink cartridge

carrier.

8 Snap each lid closed.

9 Lift the printer unit, and hold the scanner support up while lowering the printer unit until
it is completely closed.
