More details needed to answer this question. If you can print to network devices via WiFi, try a generic HP laserjet driver. This old printer will not support any sort of direct printing.

The laser scanner has failed.

This error indicates a problem with the laser scanner. This model like the 2200 it replaced, have issues with the scanner motor getting to stiff and not rotating at the correct speed which will throw this error. You can try lubricating the scanner motor, which is a rather detailed item to try and describe and requires a reasonable amount of technical ability. If you are going to attempt it, go do feedroller.com and download the service manual. You will need to disassemble the printer to the point where you can get at the laser scanner. Then you open the laser scanner and you will see a grey round metal cap with a four sided mirror on top. Try to avoid touching the mirrors with bare hands as the need to be super clean to keep image quality at its best. There will likely be a retainer on one side or the other that keeps the grey cap from lifting up. You remove that retainer, lift up the grey cap and then clean the shaft that is underneath. The place a single drop of very light oil, such as sewing machine oil, on the shaft and put the cap back down and replace the retainer. Close the scanner up, reassemble and test. If it still does not work then you will likely need to source a new scanner or a new printer.

Depends on what part of printing that's slow. Parallel port may be slower than a USB or network connection. If your printer doesn't include a USB port, one may be available to add to it. Same for a network connection. Other things that make laser printers slow is what you are printing. Text typically prints quickly, but images take longer, and large images take even more time. Some software waits to send the first page until the last page is done "processing" before sending anything to the printer. You may be able to change that.
