Motorola TalkAbout T5530 2-Way Radio - Page 2 Questions & Answers
Seem to be working fine
The manual should be available on Motorola.com. There are two settings on each radio that must match. One is the channel and the other is the ctcss or "tone". These settings allow multiple people on the same radio channel without having to listen to all of them. The numbers do not matter as long as the match each other. They are set via a menu or settings button on the radio.

I have recently purchased a motorola talkabout
You might check your user guide for the frequency list and see if they coincide with one another. It could be they were made for different countries/continents OR you could simply need to check your programming. If so, check the frequency, code and Qt filter (if any). All three units must be set identically to function together. For basic operation set your code and Qt filter to zero (off).
Best regards.

I cant hear anything after just 20 feet.
1) Check to see your frequencies are set the exact same. It is possible you are on a "near" frequency and within 20' you are having enough bleed over to open the receiver on the one radio.
2) Hold your radio antenna straight up. Tilting it to the side can reduce your range.
3) Check your batteries. Trade the battery to the other radio to see if it makes a difference or if the problem switches to the other radio.
4) Introduce a 3rd known good radio and see if you can determine which of your two are bad.
5) Note the obstacles between the two units. If you are talking inside a building you could have an insurmountable obstacle such as a steel firewall.
6) Shut off any VOX feature, to assure ambient noise is not interferring.
7) Last, set the radios back to a very basic setting with the Code, Qt filter and Call Tones turned off. See if it improves your range.
Best regards.

My motorola talkabout(1998)will not connect to
Check that both the channel and subchannel match between the radios. depending on your specific model, the channel should be between 1 - 14 , and the subchannel should be between 1 - 38. If this does not work I will need the specific model number to assist further.

T5530 chargers
Read the back of the transformer and see what the output voltage is. Find another transformer with something within 1-2 volts of what the broken transformer is. If you are lucky you will find one with the same size plug, if not you will have to change plug. Any transformer within 1-3 volts over will work.
Most people have them in junk drawres.

Muting the sound
Hi,
The sound produced by a Motorola radio when the mike is keyed refers to the "Transmitting
Call Tone" which is another feature other than the "Interference
Eliminator" or the "Roger
Beep" feature.
On most Motorola GMRS/FRS TalkAbout radios, setting the "Call
Tone" to 0 disables the feature. This is done with the radio ON by pressing on the "Menu" button 3 times which will result in the display showing the current Call Tone setting (flashing) and the letters CA; pressing on the <- or +> buttons will change selection (you
will also hear the different Tones), select 0 (it
may be up to 5 or 10 depending on the version). Press on the "Menu" or "PTT" button to set, save and exit.
Hope that this be of some help/idea. Pls post back how things turned out or should you need additional information.
Good luck and kind regards.

Will a Motorola TalkAbout T5320 transmit to a Motorola TalkAbout T5530?
Hello Blindmaster,
Check the Continuous Tone Coded Squelch (CTCSS) settings on all the radios. (Note that some manufacturers refer to this feature as a “Privacy Code” or “Quiet Code.” The actual name of the feature may vary.) This feature encodes a low-frequency signal on your radio transmission. This signal is below the range of human hearing but can be detected by other radios. When the CTCSS feature is active your radio will ignore any signal that it receives that does not have the proper tone encoded on it.
In order for these radios to communicate, all of the radios need to be on the same channel and have the same CTCSS code programmed or the CTCSS feature must be disabled.
I suspect that CTCSS is activated on your T5530s but is not enabled on your T5320. This would result in the situation you describe.
Also take note that when using different brands / models of radios to communicate with one another that the CTCSS code numbering scheme may not necessarily be the same from radio to radio. For instance, CTCSS code “4” on the Motorola TalkAbout series actually corresponds to code “A” on the Motorola Sport models.
Best Regards,
Agent Ken
