It sounds like the motor is heating up and tripping the overload. The squealing is probably coming from you pump. Tilt the washer back and turn the pulley for the pump by hand and if it make the squeal, replace. If it does not you may have a bad transmission.

you need to replace the water level switch

drum barely turns by hand--very stiff. Feels like the brake is engaged. Burned and broke the belt. Only discovered brake issue after replacing the belt, which was easy enough. What's wrong and how do I fix it? Searched high and low and can't locate any threads or videos explaining this repair. Thank you

Most washers have one or two belts. Check your lid switch. If a lid switch is bad, it can cause the washer to not work properly. Sometimes, they will not work at all. Make sure you check your drive motor. The drive motor controls the spinning, draining, and agitation. Most washers have the reverse motor, meaning the shaft rotates in both directions, clockwise and counterclockwise. It is possible to lose one direction and not the other. Some washers have a clutch that controls the agitation. If it is bad or worn, it may prevent the agitator to work. Most of these washers come from General Electric. You could have a bad motor coupler. They are located on the side of the motor drive inside the washer. It is also possible that you have a bad transmission. Check the agitator itself. You could have a bad spline or two. The splin accompanies the shaft and allows the movement of the agitator. If you rule out all the parts above, you may have an electrical issue or an issue with the control board. It is very important to test each part and make sure it is getting power. If a part is not working and not getting any power, the power loss may be the reason that it doesn't work. You can test the current in the wires with a voltage meter. Its the water pump- a shiney metal retainer is partially out and rubbing against its housing.

this is a common complaint even when we called this the maytag performa washer replace the brake and lining

make sure the lid switch is being activated. you can raise the lid a little and use a butter knife to push the plunger in all the way. sometimes these dont get set in right. double check it. you should hear a little click when you push in.

1. If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows: If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. This model does not have the "motor coupler". It has the belt drive. Here is a diagram of it.

Check the back of the lid their is a litel plastic button to make sure the lid is closed see if not broken or stack
or see if drain pomp V belt is out of place or broken
this is the simple way

if the water is coming out thetop off the machine it sounds like your pressure level switch is faulty or blocked.
