The circuit board may look good, but a power surge can damage the tiny resistors, diodes, and transistors. Any one of those mention can render the unit inoperable.

Are you using the 3 phono conectors on the back of the machine? These only feed the output of the DVD not the VHS. Use a Scart lead to view both outputs. Hope this helps.
