DeLonghi EAM3500 Espresso Machine/Coffee Maker - Page 7 Questions & Answers
What do i do when it flashes descale
See page 18 of your owner's manual for how to do a descaling; it's not a difficult procedure. As to your steamer problem, ensure that the milk container lid is perfectly clean; rinse with plenty of hot running water and ensure that water flows through the openings freely.
Make sure that you are using 2% milk; make sure it's cold 2% milk.
How to flush Delonghi Macnifica Coffee Machine -
I bought a cafe parma (delonghi) on e-bay and was disappointed that it was so mineral-encrusted when it came. I was afraid to even plug it up -- much less run any water through it.
I mixed up hot water and vinegar and poured it inside. Lots of solid flakes emptied out the top a couple of times. Then I mixed up a final solution of water and vinegar and ran it through the machine.
I had been running a motorized Hamilton Beach model for about two months. And it had quit siphoning water. I couldn't find the Black and Decker or Mr. Coffee models similar to the one I had been running for years. They looked the same as the Cafe Parma model.
Now my Cafe Parma is making great expresso!!! I'm getting ready to take the Hamilton Beach apart. It will probably end up in the trash. It was 40 bucks on clearance at Wal Mart.
Milk not frothing
I purchased a unit second hand for my wife's birthday today. It's only 4 months old, got it home, tested it, same problem... No froth!
I've read all the posts here and all were very helpful troubleshooting guides however they did not solve the issue.
Understanding how the frothing mechanism functions is half the battle in figuring out the solution. It's a simple vacuum type system. No doubt you've read about checking the orings. This is definately the first thing to check however if this is not the reason then consider the following.
The larger of the white tubes that has the red and black oring inserts deep into its port on the tap. Why? It pushes steam past the milk pipe directly into the chrome frothing tube which causes a vacuum essentially drawing milk up it's hose creating the froth. What you can't see without further investigation is that on the underside of the tube centered between the red and black orings is a small hole. This hole is responsible for drawing the milk upwards. If this is blocked, and it probably is then no milk and no froth. Use a really small screwdriver to carefully clean the white tube both from the front and the little hole underneath.
So in conclusion. Any air leak between the red and black orings will prevent the vacuum required to draw milk up the tube and alternatively any blockage of the milk channel will also obviously prevent the flow into the frothing mechanism. Hope this helps.
I have a Delonghi EAM
remove the o rings where the milk frother connects
to, there is a green, red and black rubber O ring. Remove them and get
a toothpick and clean around where they sit. You will notice a hard
milk build up like when you get on your teeth. This is what
tbirdfan1 says:
may be causing your problem the o-rings are not setting their properly
tbirdfan1 says:
here is some more information
tbirdfan1 says:
It
turns out the electrical connection for the solenoid valve that feeds
the hot water out into the milk jug/hot water tap had come loose. They
are clipped on rather than being soldered into place. Trace the wires
back to the main board from the sole
tbirdfan1 says:
from the solenoid (brass bit with grommets) and check that the clips are in place.
Machine will not **** up the milk, just steam comes
remove and clean the O Rings.
I had the same problem, removed the o rings where the milk frother connects to, there is a green, red and black rubber O ring. Remove them and get a toothpick and clean around where they sit. You will notice a hard milk build up like when you get on your teeth. This is what is causing your problem.

Different lids for EAM3500?
Yes, it is true. We bought our latte lid for the EAM3500 for AUD$40 at a local appliance store that sold coffee machines.
It has a lever that you push back and forth to change from cappuccino to latte.
I need to decalcify my delonghi 4500
Descaling is another word for decalcification - I would consult the user manual for your exact model, because these directions are actually for the EAM3400, so there might be minor variations:
When the appliance displays the message:
DESCALE
You should perform the descale cycle.
Proceed as follows:
• make sure the appliance is ready.
• press the button (the light over the button comes on) then press the button repeatedly until
the appliance displays:
DESCALE NO
• Press and the appliance displays the message:
DESCALE YES
• Press the button to start the descale program.
• Empty the tank and pour in the contents of one bottle (4.2 fl. oz.) of DURGOL descaler plus 34 oz. of
water. For subsequent descaling operations, descaling solution can be purchased from authorized technical
service centers.
Note: Make sure splashes of descaler do not fall onto surfaces sensitive to acid such as marble, limestone
and glaze.
• Place a plastic or glass container with a minimum capacity of 50 oz under the hot water spout (Fig. 3);
• Turn the steam knob half a turn counterclockwise (fig.3). The descaling solution will run out of the cappuccino
frother and start to fill the container underneath.
• The descale program automatically performs a series of run offs and pauses to remove lime scale deposits
from inside the coffee maker.
• After about 30 minutes, the appliance displays:
DESCALING COMPLETED TURN KNOB
• Turn the steam knob a half turn clockwise as far as it will go (fig. 4).
The appliance must now be rinsed through to eliminate residues of descaling solution from inside the appliance.
Proceed as follows:
• Remove the water tank, rinse and fill with clean water.
• Reposition the tank.
• Empty the collection container (under the cappuccino frother) full of liquid and then put it back under the
cappuccino frother.
• Turn the steam knob a half turn counterclockwise (fig. 3).

Hot water is run off from the cappuccino frother into the container below and the appliance displays:
RINSING
• When the water tank is empty, the appliance displays the message:
RINSING COMPLETED TURN KNOB
• Turn the steam knob clockwise as far as it will go (fig. 4) and refill the water tank with clean water.
• The descale program is now complete and the appliance is ready to make coffee again.
NOTE: if the descaling cycle is interrupted before completion, the appliance continues to display the descale
message and the program must be started again from the beginning.
Coffee Grinder on the EAM3500
We just went through the same situation. We opened the top the Magnifica to get to the grinder and removed the four screws to seperate the grinding pieces. Inside we discovered two black fosilized beans/stones! We removed those, cleaned out all the bean dust and it is working like new! Took about an hour.
Brewing System stuck
Hi, I think this is something I encountered once. Try this:
1. Shut the service door
2. unplug the machine, wait for any of the shut down noises to stop
3. plug the machine back in, wait for any noises to stop
4. check to see if everything is back in order
The most important thing is to keep the service door shut, and all the parts, ground basket, drip tray etc. in place. The mechanical will only operate with these things in place.
Hope this helps.
