Soke coming out of the top of my camera
its probably already on its way out. I am wondering why you are asking such a question on a forum rather than taking it straighyt to a camera store to have it fixed before it becomes totally fused.
Longer you use it ij this condition the more it will cost to fix

I am sorry my vivitar 990HD will not format cards, I have tried the lock on the side of the card in all positions. Ihave tried different cards (which is not a cheep thing to do) and nothing is working. The guy at Best Buy said their is a problem with the internal card reader. I would like to know what I can do to get it fixed.???????????? I would appreachate any help you may give me. Thank you very much. Mike

You should make it a practice to format (initialize) your card from your camera's menu each time you use it. That will wipe all data and give you a clean start. If you format your card from your camera and it still indicate a full memory card, then the card is likely bad.
Halo around main subject
Check for dirt on the front element of the lens. I am always amazed that almost every point and shoot digital I see has a filthy lens.This can also be caused by condensation inside the lens or on the rear element

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program such as
Picasa.
How do i set my

Date and time function
The date and time (and a lot more) are stored with every picture in its EXIF metadata. Any photo viewing/editing program should be able to display this data. To print this data, please consult the documentation for whatever program you're using to print your pictures. Depending on the program and printer you may print the date on the image, in the margins, or on the back.

Lens won't retract on SD550
Try resetting the camera by removing the battery for 20 mins. then
replace the battery go to the camera's menu and set the Date and Time.
Lens stuck
Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...
Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it.
