Try to Reset Printer Ink Obsorber..
Resetting the waste ink absorber on a Canon printer can resolve some error codes that appear when turning it on.
- Make sure the printer is turned off.
- Press and hold the Resume button (triangle inside a circle).
- Whilst it is held down, hold down the Power button. The green led light should come on.
- Keep the Power button held down. Release the Resume button and then press it twice. The light should go amber, then green again.
- Release the Power button.
- Press the Resume button four times and then press the Power button straight after to confirm the selected action (Reset Counter Absorber).
- Turn off the printer and then turn it on again

Hi Wendy, According to the user guide for your printer, the only 2 cartridges that you can use is CL51 and CL52. From my references, the PG-40 cart doesn't go to your printer. If you are having trouble with your printer printing black, then you would have to replace the CL-51 Cart. I would make sure that the heads are clean before running out for a new cartridge. You should be able to do a "Printhead Clean" from the settings.Hope this helps.Let us know if we have helped you with your question.Mac =)

You need to Remove the ink Cartridge first in order for the code to take effect.
1) Closethe print head cover.
2) While pressing the Stop/Reset button, press the Power button. (Do not release the buttons. TheLED lights in green to indicate that a function is selectable.)
4) While holding the Power button, release the Stop/Reset button. (Do notrelease the Power button.)
5) While holding the Power button, press the Stop/Reset button 2 times,(Canon idle will appear)and then release the Power and Stop/Reset buttons.(Each time the Stop/Reset button is pressed, the LED lights alternately ineither orange or green, starting with 0.
6) When the LED stops blinking and lights in green, press the Stop/Resetbutton 4 times. (Each time the Stop/Reset button is pressed, the LEDlights alternately in either orange or green, starting with orange.)
7) Press the Power button 2 times. ( the '' Canon" appear twice).The LED lights in green, and the selectedfunction is performed. (When the operation completes, the printer returns tothe menu selection mode automatically.)
8) Power off then back on and test.
9) Congrats!!

You need to power cycle the printer by unplugging the power cable from the back of the printer if it still does not resolve the issue, you can try changing the power cable and if not get it checked could be hardware issue.

4. PRINTER TRANSPORTATION
This section describes the procedures for transporting the printer for returning after repair, etc.
1) In the service mode, press the Power button to finish the mode, and confirm that the paper lifting plate of the sheet feeder unit is raised.
2) Keep the print head and ink tanks installed in the carriage.
[See Caution 1 below.]
3) Turn off the printer to securely lock the carriage in the home position. (When the printer is turned off, the carriage is automatically locked in place.)

4) To further secure the carriage to prevent movement from the home position during transportation, make and use a fixing tool in the following procedures:
i. Fold an A4-sized paper 5 times, and wrap it twice with tape, as shown in Figure A below (to prevent the fixing tool from caught into the inside of the
printer).
ii. Insert the fixing tool between the carriage and the main case unit, and securely fix it with tape, as shown in Figures B and C below.
Note: The tape should be similar to the polyester tape used at shipment, which will not easily be torn or removed, or leave adhesive on the unit when
removed.

Open the lid, remove the ink, clean with fine tissue paper both inside and the ink connecting rimb. replace properly as instructed. You may need to put off AC supply and on again. Also be sure you are replacing with the right cagride number.

Canon won't use refilled inks unless you replace the chip on the cartridge, or purchase a chip resetter on line.
