How to turn on the wireless switch on my IBM T42

There isn't a switch on the T42. (I'm using one to write this). the Function (Fn) key toggles the adapters but only if the correct utility is loaded. That is on the lenovo site called 1qkcb9ww or 8jvu12ww. Not sure which controls those features. If Fn+F5 doesn't do it... You otherwise usually get that message when there is a network adapter conflict and sometimes if the driver has become inactive which it does not too often. Try first disabling any other network adapters like Ethernet and maybe even the infrared network adapter though I doubt that could be it. Mine is disabled anyway. Do this in 'Network connections' from control panel for the Ethernet or with Device manager (Systems>hardware>device manager) if you never use a wired connection. If that doesn't help try reinstalling the drivers from the Lenovo site. Andrew L.

My touchpad buttons don't work IBM T42 laptop

In this case you probably disabled it by mistake ..and you need to enable it again ..Go to control panel ..and locate the touch pad..and see if it needs enabling . If this will not work ..you have to download the driver for the touch pad..and reinstall it ..or ..if the driver is still in the system it is enough to get to control panel ..add hardware ..and run the add new hardware wizard..This will search for hardware and show the ones which are not installed or ..if no one is present ..select already added and look for the pad..Or ..I would option for getting into device manager..(right click on computer ..select properties../hardware /device manager..or direct device manager for win7 ..)in the device manager select the touch pad..and click right on it ..and select update driver..This will start the wizard and install the missing driver if it is still in the system ..If it isn't you will have to install it manually after you download it from the support site ..or from the disk ..

System restore XP doesn't go back a month

The system restore will only work if it has a restore point available ..These restore points are the ones that are highlighted on the calendar when the restore service is accessed..If you only have the current month displayed..you can roll back the calendar ..and choose a date which is highlighted..but if you do not have a functional restore point you will not be able to do it ..If the system was recently installed it also will not have a restore point available older than the date it was installed...or the date the system restore was enabled..My advice is to choose a date available ..and restore it anyway if it makes problems ..it is not necessary to restore it to a date so far back ..but to a date when you know it worked well..If the system was affected by a virus...you have to know that the system restore may brink it back if it has a restore point not affected by the virus..but the problem will still be in the computer and will came back ...so the action is to reinstall it completely or use the recovery disk or partition .

My PCI Modem drivers missing

The same model ThinkPadcan have different types of network, video and audio drivers and unless youknow exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download allthe drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver. When you download thedrivers, write down the device driver and it's file name so you have a recordof which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files arelocated on your hard drive. Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEBsite - support/download page and download the latest Windows device drivers foryour model computer, Use this link: - http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true You can download thevarious drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, theywill then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install thevarious drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

Error 00161 and 00163

Hi rod jd26...
The error codes are telling you you need to replace the cmos/bios battery in your computer.
You also can fix the error by taking out the cmos battery, which is under the laptop and the cover only has 1 screw. Take that out, and replace it.

I have IBM thinkpad when

Hi,

Im very sorry to hear that, please follow these simple steps for you to be able to isolate the exact problem.

1. Removed the battery.
2. Connect the laptop directly to the power outlet without using the battery just for the meantime.
3. Turn on the laptop. If the laptop is able to power on, that means that the AC adapter is working fine as well as the DC port. If the laptop is not able to turn on, it maybe the AC adapter itself or the DC port.
4. Try to use another AC adapter if possible, make sure that that AC adapter is working fine. If the laptop is still not turning on, the problem is with the DC port itself. In that case, you will need to replaced the Motherboard itself.

Hope this will help...Thank you for using Fixya...

Ibm T42 problem with usb ports and PCMCIA bay

first let me say i take a rather blunt approach to o/s issues, this being said I think re installation of the O/s xp sp3 and then update of the drivers fro the laptop from IBM web site would be the best way to go with this. I feel that most likely the drivers for the ports you are using are not up to date for your devices (usb items).
I appologise if this is not what you wanted to hear but it is the best way to get working thos areas that are malfunctioning at this point.
Last if this does not solve the issue then the Motherboard would be the next item I would investigate as causeing problems a replacement would be called for if it is suspect as damaged or defective.
