If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow myinstructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

My thinkpad r40 has not display on the screen.

There are a few options as far as what could be going wrong but unfortunately whatever it is, it won't be good. The options are: video card (probably onoboard, if this is the issue the whole motherboard will need replacement), driver board for the LCD display (cheaper fix) or the LCD itself (probably not the issue). The only way to know for sure is to take it in to a place that fixes laptops and have them look at it. They can order the part you need and install it for you or at least check it out and give you a quote. If it's the motherboard it would be better just to buy another laptop instead since it might cost up to $300.

There's a very low chance it could be driver software related but this could only be the case if it does it ONLY after starting windows and during the welcome screen. If it does it during that black screen with white writing when it boots up, then it's hardware since at that point no drivers are loaded.

Hope it helps.

Need to restore facory settings on ibm r40

Hi, During the boot at the THINKPAD SCREEN press the Thinkvantage key ( Blue button ) it will launch rescue and recovery and allow you to reboot factory. This only works if you did not corrupted/deleted the rescue and recovery hidden partition on the HDD.
Otherwise you will need the rescue and recovery CD to proceed. IBM/Lenovo support should be able to provide you the CD.
thanks and have a nice day J-

A dark blue ink splodge has appeared on my screen!

Hi,
Usually we can see these type of spots, if we place any magnetic field next to a CRT monitor. Try removing if any speakers or its power adapters or any radiating devices near to the monitor. It will get ok after a while.
If still the problem persists contact a service center.
Please come back and rate my solution if this turns helpful for you or also if you need more clarification. Thnx

IBM R40 Screen Problems

I think you have an inverter board thats just about dead. It's located in the screens plastic housing at the bottom of the screen just above the keyboard. It's about 4 inches long and a half inch wide. There's just one little cable connecting it. But you have to take your screen apart to get to it. It's easy to replace and relatively inexpensive but it does require a little disassembly skill.
Also ,I will need the exact part number from the bottom of your laptop. There are several different R 40 models, and 2 different screen sizes.

The screen is black but the background is there it

I would try a solution of CLR and try to wipe the coffee down with a sponge. If that doesnt work I think you might need a new monitor.

Try connecting another monitor first, but seem to be related to your video card.
Check the video card on your computer.

Lcd monitor streaking

The solution may be one of several things. here are my ideas in increasing severity.

1) Bad connection. Fix: tear apart the screen and check the video connection. It looks just like that when you don't have a good connection with the sync signals from the motherboard

2) Bad screen. Check video feed to external monitor. Shut down laptop. Plug in an external monitor. Start it up and the external monitor should show a good picture if the problem is a connection or a bad screen. If it's a bad screen, you will need to replace it (easy to do at home for 1/3 the cost of some outside source). Go to ifixit or instructables or repair4laptop to get ideas and walkthroughs. So, good feed to external monitor and no bad connections=bad screen... maybe.

3) bad video card. Replace motherboard = $$$. this is more difficult to do at home. If the external monitor shows the same streaky picture, you're pretty much guaranteed that you will have to replace the motherboard.

try pushing on various parts of the computer to see about bad connections, usually two thirds to three quarters of the way up the back of the screen is the connection and somewhere under the keyboard is the video card. don't press too hard, but see if anything's different when you try it. Good luck.

Blank Screen

ccfl ( cold cathode flouroscent lamp ) is the backlit feature of the lcd panel. If you see a blank screen but do see the output on the external monitor then you sure have to take it to the hardware tech to get the inbuilt LCD panel checked. it seems to be a electronic failure. Thanks Ashish.

IBM wheelwriter 6 only types when I press hard to the keys. Normal typing doesn't activate key strikes. Is there a sensitivity adjustment on the wheelwriter 6?

The IBM Wheelwriter 6 typewriter does not have a user-adjustable sensitivity setting for key strikes. However, the issue you're describing might be related to the keyboard mechanism, individual key switches, or the impact solenoid. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:
  1. Clean and Lubricate: Over time, dust, dirt, and debris can accumulate inside the typewriter, affecting key movement. Try gently cleaning the keyboard area, especially around the key switches and mechanisms. Additionally, applying a small amount of appropriate lubricant to the moving parts might help improve key movement.
  2. Key Switches: Each key has its own mechanical switch underneath. If a key requires more force than usual to activate, it could be due to a worn or dirty switch. You might need to disassemble the typewriter to access and clean the key switches.
  3. Impact Solenoid: The impact solenoid is responsible for striking the print head against the paper to make an impression. If the solenoid is weak or sticking, it could result in the behavior you're describing. Try cleaning and lubricating the solenoid. If the problem persists, the solenoid might need to be replaced.
  4. Key Flex: The flex you feel in the keyboard might be contributing to the issue. If the keyboard has any physical damage or if the flex circuit is not seated properly, it can affect key activation. Carefully inspect the keyboard area for any visible damage or misalignment.
  5. Professional Repair: If the above steps do not resolve the issue, it might be best to seek the assistance of a professional typewriter technician. They have experience with these machines and can diagnose and repair mechanical issues more accurately.

I have a IBM personal computer Platinum III When I turn on my computer it starts normally but after that on my screen appears a text that says "System Error: tastiera Blocked" And after I can't continue to boot and it shows on my screen a error without a code...What should I do??

Tastiera indicated that you have a keyboard problem. Most desktops can't run without a working keyboard. (You need the keyboard connected and working during the power-on self test, POST.) Currently the motherboard can't communicate with the keyboard. What is the model number for your computer? I don't recall a Platinum III, just a Pentium III. Is it a laptop or a desktop? What type of keyboard do you have (USB or PS/2 connector) or is it the built-in one of a laptop? Are you using some sort of converter/adapter for the connections? The USB to PS/2 converter for a mouse does not work with a keyboard. There are some USB to dual PS/2 converters available. However, they don't work with with all motherboards. What OS is installed on the system? Try a different keyboard. (You should try a PS/2 keyboard if the system has PS/2 ports. If the OS is older than Windows 98 v. 2, then the USB ports are even more likely to not see the keyboard in POST.) If you use a USB keyboard, try different ports. If possible, make sure that the keyboards work on other machines. If it does, then I recommend replacing the system. The Pentium III is a ~20 year old CPU. That's certainly old enough to have major failures. I hope this helps. Cindy Wells
