Taking the Confusion Out of Using a Dehumidier

Many consumers are confused about setting the proper levels of humidity on dehumidifier units. And then think something is mechanically wrong with the unit. When in fact, over 70% of the time it operator error. That and a lack of proper routine maintenance are the problem.

The numbers on the LED screen represent the amount of humidity you want to maintain. Not the amount you want to remove. For example: If you set the level at 70%, which is rather high, more than likely the unit may start up momentarily and then shut OFF. That's because the setting is to high. Now, if you set it at 45%, the unit will turn ON and run until either the bucket is full and/or the humidity level has reached 45%.

Here's a good rule of thumb if you use your humidifier year round.

In the Winter you want to maintain a humidity level of 50 to 60%. The moister the air, the more comfortable it will feel. Plus, the humidity helps eliminate static electricity in the air.

Conversely, in the hot, humid Summer months, you want to keep the humidity level as low as possible (35% or less). Also, if you have ceiling fans, using them 24 hours a day, helps to move the air and generate a windchill, which fools your body into thinking it's cooler than what it really is. At the same time, it's saving on energy costs by not having to run your AC as much, because the dehumidifier is removing the humidity.

Just remember, the higher the setting, the higher the humidity level will stay. The lower the setting, the more humidity will be removed and the more comfortable you'll feel in the Summer.

And don't forget Routine Maintenance. Clean the air intake filter regularly. Clean and wipe down the refrigerant coils every 60 days. And don't allow water to remain in the collection bucket to long. As mold can build up in it.

Speaking of which, the water in the bucket, when fresh, is great for watering house plants. Because, when it's fresh, it's distilled water. No chlorine or minerals.

I don't have a manual for the unit. How do you set

These manuals are hard to find. Unless, you know that Fedders made this unit for Maytag.
Here is a link to a website where you can download and print the manual for future use. It says "Fedders" on the manual, but its the same model # as yours.

We had a hose attached to empty into a drain, but

Was the hose attached to the bucket or directly attached to the inside of the humidifier?
If it was to the bucket, the hose may have slightly pulled the bucket out of place, disengaging the safety switch. Unplug the unit and wait 5 minutes. Then plug the unit back in. Turn it to ON and remove the bucket and carefully reinstall it. You should hear a "click" sound when it's properly in place and the unit should start back up,

Hope this helps to solve your problem.

Maytag M7DH45B2A - Fan Motor

Hi,
The fan motors do occasionally get clogged up with fluff - especially if the machine has been operated without the filter screen installed. Also it is possible that some foreign object has fallen into the motor and is jamming it.

With the power off, check to see if the blower will turn when poked with a long plastic pointy thing :-)

If these suggestions do help you solve the problem, please give my reply a rating to help others judge my knowledge / guessing skills.
If they do not, please hold off on the rating and add a comment with more details so I can try to help you further. Cheers, D

Fan motor

Hi,
I can't imagine why a >thermal< fuse would be insulated as I thought they were designed to melt when the ambient temperature exceeded the stated value
There are some pics of typical thermal fuses here :-
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=thermal+fuse
I also have difficulty imagining why they would out such a component in a fan motor assembly - it's not the sort of thing that usually catches fire!
Equally, a non-thermal filament type fuse would normally be placed where it could be seen and replaced. I would expect it to be mounted on a pcb - soldered in, perhaps, but in an obvious place.
We are not allowed to exchange emails via fixya.com, but if you wanted to upload that schematic to senduit.com, and then post the download link here, perhaps I could take a look at the schematic myself.
Sorry this is taking so long to sort out!
Cheers, D.

Fuse

Is there any way you could test the continuity of the fuse - or "jump" it temporarily - without heating it to over 130F, of course! Some thermal fuses can be broken without looking the part.

130F seems a very low temp... Can you post or send me the schematic?

I suggest you experiment with the settings. Does this unit have a "current humidity" display?
Start with a higher setting and let it run for a few days watching how much water it pulls. Keep turning it down a little every few days until the problem you're trying to fix no longer exists (musty smell, sweating pipes, etc.)
