I have an older dishwasher also and recently my wife also complained about it not cleaning right... so me being the man I am tried in vain to clean the things... Bought new spray arms online and installed them in minutes...now the thing works like new... However I have also found that if the heating element goes bad then that also can mess things up bad... I think he is blowing smoke...well..you know where...

I would try a few different detergents before giving up on it. Some will work better with your water then others...
also try different rinse aids..

Keep experimenting till you find a combo that works...

Before you go tearing into your dishwaher start with the basics. That would be inspecting the drain outlet and drain hose from the sink connection point all the way back to the pump outlet connection. Most of the time what happens is there is debris in the air-gap at the sink or the garbage disposal connection port gets clogged. If you are observing that the dishes are not clean, then you’ll need to follow certain steps to be sure where exactly the issue. First thing to check for is the detergent cup and spray arms. Check if the dishwasher’s spray arms are working fine and all the holes of the arms are clear. Now try using a different detergent like gel or liquid based detergent to see if it helps.

Dishes are left unclean when the dishwasher is not filling in properly or when the water pressure is low. Check for water pressure and water inlet valve. The water inlet valve if faulty will draw very little or no water. However, if you observe that water pressure is fine and there is no issue with the Fill valve then check whether the dishwasher is draining. If it’s not draining then see if the drain hose is plugged or clogged. If drain hose is fine and the dishwasher is still not draining then there is some issue with the drain pump or drain filter. To check this you’ll need to disassemble the dishwasher and trace back the drain hose to a pump, remove the drain hose from pump and clean the debris from the pump and filter. Make sure you have lots of towels as there would be a lot of water coming out from the pump.
Next thing to check if the dishwasher is draining and filling properly is water temperature. Water temperature should be between 120 and 140 F. If water is not hot enough then heating element has gone bad, to check the element you’ll need a multimeter. Use the multimeter and check if the Rx1 reading on the meter shows reading between 1200 (1.2K) ohms and 1500 (1.5K) ohms, if not the heating element has died. Please post back if more information is required.

Ok so your dishwasher won't do anything... it justs sits there and "Hums" you can't make it respond to any controls, and the ONLY way to Stop it. is to unplug the unit, replugging back in it simply "Hums" again and will do nothing.
Now this happens because, the STOP Button, is pressed and the "Door Opened", during the Wash Cycle. This should NOT be done. You shouldNEVER TURN IT OFF MID-CYCLE. you should instead, Simply, pull on the handle, to Open the door, the system will take care of everything, after, you close it,and pick up where it left off. The turning OFF, makes the machine "Think" that a New Cycle, is going to be done, before the old one is finished, and resets itself to do it all again. But it still has water, that's not meant to be there so it must dump it out.
Now, the FIX. Take the Dishwasher, out, and tip over on it's side, tip to about a 45' angle. Water will come out from underneath, this is from a small "Overflow" reservoir. this reservoir has an "Anti-Flood" switch. The removing of this water will "Reset" this Switch, and allow the dishwasher to work again.
So what happens, is this, when the STOP button is pressed Mid-Cycle, the machine must "Dump" whatever water is still in the machine, into the "Overflow Reservoir". This water then causes the Anti-flood switch to jam, and this stops the machine, until it is reset,by the above method.

The first thing I would check is the settings for the wash and rinse stages of the cycle .. And check the supply valves .. If the washer is set for a cold rinse , for example, and the cold valve is off .. that is a problem ..
