Palm z22 touch screen screwed up

I have the palm z22 and I have hard, soft, and warm reset it several times. When I hard reset the digitizer comes up but it continually asks me to tap the targets and nothing happens. When I did a warm reset it got me to the welcome screen and would let me click next a few times to configure my palm but then it froze up again and all I heard was beeps when I tapped. Can you please help me? I've tried everything I could think of.

Palm Z22 will not turn on

My Palm worked fine before Christmas...sat on my desk for 2-3 weeks, then would not turn on at all nor will it apparently take a charge.  It's just a bit over a year old, but it would seem that it must be the battery-could that be so soon?      I've tried a "soft reset", but nothing.  The screen will not light, even when being "charged".

Well you can try a trickle charging on the device.Trickle charging is connecting the device to the computer using the USB cable and then let the device get charged using the computer power source, make sure that you charge the device for 6-8 hrs on the computer.

You need to take the Palm z22 apart. Use your finger nail to pry off the small cover that surrounds the UBS connecter. Then unscrew the two screws you see. Now Stick your finernail into the middle side of the Palm. Where the white tope meets the black back cover. Use a very small screwdriver to go into the space you made with your fingernail, and pop the plastic holders. You can see where the clips are by looking at the side.Careful not to break anything.

Now your palm is open. The touch screen connector needs to be removed and put back in. Remove the plastic retainer, pull out the mulit cord ribbon, put it back in, put back the retainer.
Next move the black plastic foam that is on top of the retainer clip. I think when you close the case it squeezes the retainer in a bad way.

Put everything back together. If your scrared to try it send me your palm with some stamps for return postage and I will try it for you.

Hi here are the steps but ensure to backup data before you make a hard reset
Press and hold the power button
While holding the power button, use the tip of the stylus (or a similar object without a sharp tip) to gently press and release the reset button inside the hole on the back of your handheld.
Wait for the Palm Powered™logo to appear, and then release the power button.
When you see the message that warns you about erasing all of the info on your handheld, do one of the following:• Press Up on the 5-way navigator to finish the reset and show the touchscreen.• Press any other button to do a soft reset.
When prompted, tap to align the screen, and then select the language you want to use on your handheld. A screen appears showing the Palm logo and a progress bar.
When the Welcome screenappears, the hard reset iscomplete
Hope this helps and do let me know

I had the same problem and tried several of the solutions here, from cleaning around the edges of the screen, to soft and hard resets. They worked for a time, but eventually, the pointer didn't register at all. Before you throw out your unit, look on Ebay for the replacement digitizer. There are or were many when I looked, ranging from about $8 to considerably more. None of the low cost ones came with instructions, but did come with tools. Higher priced offerings were for having them replace the digitizer for you. I ordered the low priced one and figured I could figure it out. The tools they send are two tiny screw drivers with special tips and a small plastic device to pry the sections apart. If you want to do it yourself, I will be happy to explain what I did. Remember to be really gentle when you do every step. First use the pry tool on the place where the cord plugs in to connect the device to the usb slot on your computer. It is tight, but gently pry out the small black rectangle. You will see two tiny screws inside. Remove those, carefully with one of the screwdrivers that come with the digitizer and set them someplace save. These two screws or bolts have nuts, that you can't really see until the next step. Watch for them if they fall out. The next step is to use the pry tool around the edges of the white plastic face of the Z22 and separate it from the back. I would lay it on the back while you do this. There is a small u-shaped piece that is part of the reset button and it fits on a peg on the back part of the device. Carefully ease the front and back apart. There are 4 small screws that still need to be removed. Save them to replace when done. Remove the innards of the device, but Don't totally separate the sections. There are foil connectors that attach the parts and they need to be intact. Gently ease the digitizer from the white plastic face. It will have another white plastic box on it's back side. Use the pry device to separate the glass digitizer from that white box. You will see there is a gold striped foil connector on your new digitizer, about midway up the side of the device. Find the one that is connected to the old digitizer and ease it out of the slot. Remove the old digitizer. Slide the new connector into the slot. Position the new glass digitizer correctly over the white plastic box and place the innards face down into the white face of the Z22. Replace the 4 screws. Gently close the case, laying the front onto the back, so you don't displace the reset button part. Snap together and replace the two tiny screws into the section near the power cord connector. (Hopefully you didn't drop the little nuts out, during the process. If you did, you may have to back track until you can see the small white boxes that they slip into, in that location. Email me if you have problems with this. It sounds a lot worse than it was. When I finished, I was really disappointed, because it didn't turn on, the whole screen was black, which was worse than when I started. But, after I plugged it in, and let it charge about 3 hours, it worked perfectly! I am so excited! You can do this if you are patient and gentle.

Hello !

You take apart the Palm Z22 by pulling down on the back cover and remove the cover from the device. Loosen and remove the screws from the Z22's casing using a star-bit screwdriver.

That should get you started.

Hope this helps.

If you've set a password on your handheld, any hard reset will automatically become a Factory Reset. With this method, you'll enter a password and then perform a hard reset.

  1. On your handheld, launch the Prefs application. Under General, select Security.
  2. If the Password box says "Unassigned," tap the box and create a password for your handheld.
  3. Once the password has been set, remove the stylus. Disconnect your handheld from the AC charger, if connected.
  4. On your handheld, hold down the Power button.
  5. While holding down the Power button, use the stylus to press the RESET button on the back of your handheld.
  6. While still holding Power button, the screen will show the Palm logo and a progress bar. Then the circular Palm Powered logo will appear. Release the power button when you see the Palm Powered logo.
887_palmlogo_progressbar.gif spacer.gif 887_poweredcircle.gif Keep holding the Power button during this screen. spacer.gif When you see this screen, you can release the Power button.
  7. A message will appear warning that you are about to erase all the data stored on your smartphone. Press UP.
  8. You'll see a series of Palm logo screens, then a prompt to tap onscreen targets. The Factory Reset is complete.

The Z22 palm PDA is subjected to 3 points of failure. I got a used Z22 and discovered all 3 over the course of a few years. The touchscreen digitizer on the front is a plastic sheet on the top, and a glass screen on the bottom. Invisible layers of conductive paint are facing each other. Simply carrying the Z22 in your pocket, purse, briefcase, or even storing it in a drawer with pencils, staplers, rulers, etc., will, over time, deform the screen, and the damage is cumulative, so that the screen gets worse and worse. It is imperative to have a solid sheet of plastic or hard material over the screen at all times that you are not using it. Leaving the Z22 in direct hot sunlight will heat up and soften the screen, making the problem worse. Carrying the Z22 screen in your pocket on a hot day when you are sweating, will do the same. People report that the Z22 will work in a cool place like North New York, but the screen will quit, when they travel to Florida (hot). I have temporarily fixed the touchscreen by putting it in a ziplock, and sticking it in the freezer to shrink the top layer of plastic. That only worked twice. Then I use a hair dryer to heat the screen VERY hot, to shrink the screen - which worked very well, until I put it in a soft zippered camera case, which gently pushed the screen. Then I took the screen apart completely ( which no one has ever reported doing) and this worked amazingly well, -again- until I put it in a soft case that pushed the screen against the glass backing. I eventually replaced the touchscreen ($10 free shipping from China). All the information is on my tiny website at

http://kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html

The Z22 is incredibly well designed, and after ripping it apart a dozen times, and carrying it around under extreme heat and freezing cold, I would have to give the original design team at PALM, 5 stars. Your data, on the device, even though the screen may be dead, is very safe, and unless you do a HARD RESET, the data is stored on permanent memory. I had problems with a weak and dying battery, which ALL Z22s are now experiencing, since the decades of time, even with a "new" in the box, sealed Z22 will have. Low glitches of power on the battery seem to cause the BlackScreen of Death, where the LOGIC circuits that control the ON/OFF/SLEEP etc. functions get out of sync, and the unit will not charge or turn on until ALL power is removed ( typically, after a few weeks the battery drains to dead ).

All these problems are discussed and solutions posted, with photos on my website. Also are discussions on what to do with the Z22, where to get parts, how to maintain the Z22, and how to get data off the device onto the new 64 bit WINDOWS computers...

Good luck. The Z22 was an amazing device in its day, and people report that there were a few software programs for it that have never been made since - hence, they still use it...
