Good News!! I have found a way to fix this loud high pitch "grinding" noise, sudden battery "draining" accompanied by the eject "D" symbol being displayed only after a few seconds of tape play. And absolutely No thanks to Samsung's customer service. Although seemingly polite, I had to talk to 6 customer service representatives before they properly transferred me to Executive Customer Relation(ECR). They said they were experiencing technical difficulties. Once I got through, the ECR rep. insisted that the repairs will cost $160 mainly due to the cost of the parts and also admitted that he didn't know much about the technical aspect of the camcorder. And I was repeatedly told that this was not a known or "universal" issue so the warranty cannot be extended.

It is indeed a mechanical problem. The camcorder had only been used three times and kept in storage in its original box with no temperature extremes since I had puchased it at the end of 2006.

Here is the SOLUTION:
1) Gently unscrew and remove the front casing portion of the camcorder.
2) Directly underneath the lens there is crosslike metal support that extends from the tape compartment chassis. The green circuit board should rest on top of it as shown below instead of being under it .

Now the camcorder functions properly consistently. The cost = $ 0.

There are tons of programs that will do this automaticly for you. You just load the file and select the output and start. Some are free, but those with more features will charge for the program. Try download.com and type avi to mpeg converter. You can also try videohelp.com. They have forums for assistance as well as software recomendations.

The SC-D363 only can handle up to a 1 GB SD memory card, no larger, so if you are not using a 1 GB or smaller card, then that is your issue.

Make sure that the software/driver of your camcorder is installed on your computer. The driver is included in the package with your camcorder. If it's already installed, try using other USB ports on your computer. If that fails, try hooking other devices that use USB ports on your computer, and see it that work. If other devices work w/ the USB, check the USB cable of the camcorder, then try to see if there is a setup on the camcorder that indicates "connect to computer", some camcorders have this. If all else fail, contact your manufacturer.

Possible that the mode switch is jammed or the eject button is jammed. It can also be that the drive had not completed and so urges the motor to eject so as to complete the loading. failure of sensors cannot be ruled out.

well , just make sure that the camera is set to the off position when charging , otherwise i dont think it will charge properly.

Chances are that the laser lens needs cleaning. You can use a qtip and alcohol (at least 90% isopropal) to clean it. Beyond that, the unit will have to be troubleshot to find the problem. Get an estimate first, since the cost of repair can be high.

It could be a couple of different issues. These things could help.
(1) Power OFF the camera, remove battery then replace the battery, power up the cam and try to eject tape again. Nothing? try...
(2) Gently press inward on the tape cover with both thumbs a few times. Then, while pressing gently inward with one hand, press the release/eject-tape function until you hear a click or release sound. Then, if it doesn't open automatically, gently "help" open the hatch.

If it remains stuck, after follwing these steps a few times it would be my guess that perhaps the camera has been dropped in a way that jammed the mechanism controlling the eject function.

TIPS that may prevent having eject problems: When loading tape, be sure to insert the tape correctly and slowly, makeing sure the tape is placed properly. Gently press on the specific location indicated to close the tape holder, and wait for the tape to "seat" properly before closing any other part of the tape cover or hatch mechanism. Taking a few extra seconds when loading the tape can save extended frustration later.

Look in the camera menu system and change the display to Mirror.

Majority of the Mini HP laptops do not come with USB ports.
The few of them that come with the USB ports have speeds less than 2.0 and you can only connect this device to a USB with speed of 2.0 or higher. It would not work with anything lower than that.
The only advise is that you change your laptop or ask an engineer if he can help you to upgrade your USB port to a higher speed.

From the user manual, I've discovered that you have to use a IEEE 1394 cable (see the jacks display on page 11) to be able to download the movies from your camera. The camera does not come with a IEEE 1394 cable -- it only comes with a USB cable, so you will have to buy the cable.
Unfortunately, most PCs do not come with a IEEE 1394 connector and you have to buy an adapter card for a desktop computer. If you laptop does not have a IEEE 1394 port, then you are out of luck.
Once you have the cable and the port on the computer squared-away, check page 87 of the user manual for directions on how to retrieve the the video from the camera to the computer.
