Sansa e260 says connected but device not recognized

I recieved a new Sansa e260 for Christmas and installed the Sansa Media Converter, and then connected the device to the computer. However, the Sansa Media Converter (version 1.1.2.74)and Windows Media Player (version 10.00.00.4036) don't recognize the player. The screen on the e260 says 'Connected' and has the arrows going back & forth. Windows Device Manager lists Sansa e260 under 'Windows Portable Devices' and when I click on that it says Location is Location 0 (Sansa e260)and that "This device is working properly". I've downloaded and installed the Sansa Updater and checked for updated versions of the device drivers. I've rebooted the computer (Windows XP, Service Pack 2) but still no luck neither the Sansa Media Converter or Windows Media Player recognize the device. Is there more I can try?

I agree with the above suggestion. Try setting the USB Mode under "Settings" on "MSC" on the Sansa. My computer would not recognize the e260 when the mode was set to "MTP"; works fine on "MSC".

My sansa e260 will not turn on

I guess the battery could just be dead (like "i have to replace it" dead rather than "i have to charge it" dead), but, at any rate, it just will not turn on. It was plugged into my computer when i turned the computer off. the sansa showed the "disconnected" screen, and the next time I looked at it, it was totally unresponsive. I tried boot mode, to no avail.

I had the same issue as everyone else. Here is how I fixed it:
1: unplugged it from my computer
2: Made sure hold is OFF (toggled back and forth to be sure)
3: Held the record button and then hit power.

It booted right up!

MTP device not found in XP with WMP 11

Hello, I am going crazy with this because it doesn't make sense to me. Everytime I plug in my Mp3 player in MTP mode it find it and downloads the drivers, I click finish, then it finds new hardware again and goes through the same thing (endless loop). I have tried using it on other computers with XP and Windows Media Player 11 and NO problems! I can't remember but I think it may even have worked on my machine when I first got it but then started doing this "found MTP device" thing where it loads the drivers. I have tried uninstalling Windows Media Player and rolling back to 10 and that doesn't help. Any ideas what is going on or anything else I can try? I don't fully understand this MTP mode and what hardware/software is responsible for making sure it runs correctly. thanks! Matt

From:

PLace the Sansa in Recovery Mode, plug in, and see that the 16MB FORMAT icon appears in Windows Explorer.

Right click in the window, and create a new folder named sansa.fmt

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FORMAT THE RESERVED PARTITION USING THE WINDOWS FORMAT COMMAND!!

Drag and drop the sansa.fmt folder into the 16MB FORMAT partition. Right-click and select eject.

Unplug, and see if it will automatically format.

Anything over 4GB is a Micro SDHC card, not a Micro SD card. It is a completely different type of card format on the inside, and despite the compatible size and shape, it will not work on devices labeled only as Micro SD card compatible. The Sansa e200 and up (e250, e260, ect.) are NOT COMPATIBLE WITH MICRO SDHC CARDS (Micro SD cards that exceed 2GB in capacity).

I saw it mentioned somewhere else....hold down the power button for about a minute. It should come back to life. It just worked for me, after I paniced a little, of course!
