Error message: Not enough space for music DB. Please free 4MB.

I have had my Sandisk m240 for about 4 months with no problems. I have not used it in 2 or 3 days. Now when I turn it on I receive the following message: 'Not enough space for music DB. Please free 4MB.' Then the screen changes and says 'No Files'. When I connect to my PC, Windows Media Player shows that I have approx 1.76 MB of free space, but only shows the 'Record' option on the sandisk, it does not show any of the 'Music' files. I cannot add or delete or even view anything I had on the disk. I have not added or deleted any files since I last used the device so I do not know what caused this problem. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you.

Hi I have just bought a Sandisk Sansa M250, we loaded som music on it and it lasted 2 hours, then it the message came "Not enough space for music DB please free 8 MB". I couldnt even go in to the menu. I contakted Sandisk.com and 24 hours after they came up with an answer. If it's currently frozen, hold down the power button for 20 seconds in order to soft reset it. Let's try to format the player (THIS WILL ERASE ALL FILES FROM THE PLAYER). Plug it into your computer, then open My Computer, right-click the drive associated with the player, and choose Format. It may give you a choice of file system, if so, choose FAT (it may only let you choose FAT32, which is fine). Now click on Start and it should format the player. If not already done, please also update the firmware from this link: http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1368 The 20 seconds on the power button didnt work, but the formation did. Hope this helps. //Cadmann Please bear with my english

Go to Windows Media Player under the Sync tab, over on the far left should be the name of the player, click on it and find the name of the song by album title, artist, or whatever, click on the title and click delete and you should be able to delete any song you like without deleting them all

This error message may largely be due to the corrupted Music Database file that the Sansa M240 creates to maintain an information pool on the music files downloaded to it. Normally, if you are unable to completely format the player in Windows Explorer, there are still 2 other (and actually, more recommended) options that you have: (1) Switching the M240 to MSC mode and formatting in "Disk Management". You can get to this window by right-clicking the "My Computer" icon and selecting "Manage". Make sure that you use the FAT file system to optimize the 1GB memory (2) Switching the M240 to MTP mode and formatting the player in Windows Media Player 10 or version 11. The mode of the M240 can be changed by accessing the menu and going to "Settings", then choosing "USB" In general, formatting the player in "Disk Management" is more effective than formatting it in Windows Explorer. Also, it would be a good idea to upgrade the player's firmware to the latest version via the SanDisk website: http://www.sandisk.com/Retail/Default.aspx?CatID=1376 I hope this helps. The M240 is a great player.

How can I format my Sansa m240 using Windows Media Player?

I have an m240 that I use with Rhapsody, but after they did a software update to their application, my device will no longer play the subscription songs, I keep getting the Sync needed message. I contacted Rhapsody support and the first time they directed me to an ambiguous unhelpful webpage. I followed all of the instructions, with the exception of formatting the device, but I can not figure out how to do that. (They could not either.) I have completely deleted all songs from the device, from Rhapsody library and my hard drive and can not get this to work.

Any suggestions? :)

First, plug in your device. Close the prompting window asking what you would like to do.

Next (assuming you are on Microsoft Windows), go to Start>My Computer.

Scroll down until you see your device displayed as Sansa m240.

Double click on the icon.

Next, right click on the icon that comes up and choose Format...
It will give you a warning saying that it will delete all data (Which shouldn't matter, since you have apparently already deleted all your music files.) and settings.

Click OK. It should begin to format the device.

It should say "Format Complete" or something to that degree when the formatting process is complete.

(This I cannot seem to get to work on MY computer, but it should work for yours.

By the way, how did you manage to delete your songs without formatting? I need to do this!)

Thanks, and Good Luck!

ENGLISH
I had the exact same problem listed in this thread.
This is what I found on another site to fix it.
Make sure your M240 is not connected to the computer.
Then go into the "settings" menu and then go to the "usb" part.
Then Select "MSC" from the menu, instead of "Auto Select (or something like that).
Then turn off your player and connect it to the Win XP computer and it will be fully recognized
and you can then go to My Computer and see it there and use it.
