the pc that showed the error could have a problem in the bios setting (press F2 to get the bios during boot to get to the bios setting....try to reset the bios setting to factory settings)....or you could have to perform a flash of the bios.....

how long have you been using this CD ROM? I suspect the laser (lens) of the CD ROM. I think the laser (lens) is weak that's why it cannot read data/files on DVD.

To confirm if actually its a laser problem, insert an Audio CD into the CD ROM and see if will play. If it plays, then obviously, your laser (lens) is weak. But if it doesn't play Audio CD, then it might still be the laser (lens) or a mechanism problem.

Get a lens cleaner, use it to clean the lens. If that doesn't solve the problem, get a screw driver, open the CD ROM cover so that you can gain access to the lens, use a cotton board to clean the surface of the lens. This should clean dust or dirt that might be on the lens.

If non of the above solves the problem, then know that you need to replace the laser to a brand new CD ROM.

Sounds like a bad hard drive to me - if you're gonna toss the thing, toss it in my direction, why don't you?

"sometimes the drive shows up in bios" is the dead giveaway. the HDD is intermittent.

This thing uses a 2.5", 9.5mm height SATA hard drive, which is pretty darn cheap. You can buy it in stores, eBay, online...

When you power up the computer press F1 or F2 or "del" key then go to advanced .
Then disable SATA .
If already disable then enable it then save settings then check.

I was able to find drivers for this device which turns out to be an SD Card reader built into the laptop. Here is the site I found it on: http://www.toshiba.com/tai/support/support_cons.jsp
You'll want to click on "Computers and Accessories" on the left hand side, and then select "Laptop Computers".
Upon selecting the correct model, I found all the pertinent drivers for my laptop.
The Category, which is the middle column on the drivers page, is going to be something along the lines of "Driver Flash Memory SD" Az.
