I pluged my Toshiba Canvio Plus 750gb External HD

Sounds like a 2 part question.

Part 1, how do you use the drive on the computer to watch recorded shows from you DVR, simple install EX for windows which will allow your computer to access Linux formatted drives.

Part 2, how do you retrieve the files that were on it before, that depends how many new files you've put on it since. When the DVR formatted the drive it didn't erase the old files and they could easily be found again with a very inexpensive program. Each show you've recorded since will have overwritten some of the files. I will give you a link below for a review I wrote of such a program. Don't buy it right away, download the trial and scan the Toshiba, the program will show you a list of files it can recover then if you think it's worthwhile for the files it shows, only then pay for the program and recover the files.

Link for EX?

How can i format 1TB Toshiba Canvio portable hard

Right Click on your new drive in the Computer

Choose a File System (NTFS is ideal most cases) and give the new volume a name if you choose. You might like to call it something like "Portable Drive," or "Removeable Drive." If not, just take the defaults and click "OK."

You will get one last warning that you are about to format your drive and erase all data. Click OK to proceed. When you see the process has reached 100%, you are done and you're new external hard drive is ready to use!

Don't be panic. you can try some format recovery software. You can seehttp://www.asoftech.com/adr/It tells the steps how to perform data recovery. If above does not work, you may have to format the hard drive (use quick format), and then use above mentioned software to scan again the hard drive and recover your files.

if you can see your usb but its not workingports(com&lpt)right click update driver

sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem type in run "regedit" then press ok then you can see registry editor then locate below key. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11 CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} And remove upper filter and lower filter. Then restart computer then check. Also locate the below key and make sure it's value is 3 not 4. HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\usbstor make sure start value is 3 not 4

if still no luckyou might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap hope this helps

I have just tried, for

External harddrives do not come with an O/S. They are for external storage, beyond the master harddrive you have installed.

The master harddrive has the O/S.
The Platters are spinning because BIOS had a look to see what is on the Toshiba 320GB external harddrive.

[You press the Power On button. The first chipset to receive power is the BIOS chipset.
(Basic Input/Output System)

BIOS looks to see what devices are connected to the computer, does a Ram Memory count, turns the Processor on, then hands the computer over to the operating system.

BIOS finds THE harddrive with the O/S on it ]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/hard-disk.htm

When the Windows O/S (Operating System) is installed on a computer is assigns hash values to certain major hardware components in the computer.

A) Processor
B) Harddrive
C) Motherboard. (Motherboard chipsets and BIOS software on the BIOS chipset)
D) Graphics chip. (Whether it is Integrated Graphics, {OnBoard}, or a graphics card)

Change any two of these hardware components and Windows throws up a 'red flag'.
Microsoft's User License states, "One genuine copy of Windows per One computer"

If a hash value has changed, such as there are different hardware components, Windows 'feels' it is being stolen.

Why do you feel there should be an O/S already installed on the external harddrive?
Awaiting your reply please state in a Comment.

joecoolvette

If your computer or laptop has a problem detecting a USBhard drive or a USB device, and another computer can detect it, then theproblem could be a RF interference problem. Try using an USB cable that is a shielded USB cable (ie. AnUSB cable that has a clear plastic covering and you can see a metallic weavewhich covers the wires) OR a USB cable that has a Ferrite core attached to theUSB cable (the ferrite core is a cylindrical object approximately 30mm long X15mm diameter and it is attached to the USB cable near the connector).

Since you have bought it just 3 months ago, I assume it is still covered by warranty. If this is true, I recommend you contact your vendor & discuss the possibility of having a replacement.
In case you need any further assistance, please feel free to drop me a note.

Hi! i have an external

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.
